News Flash--The Cooper Reaches the Track

Hi All
Well after many months of speculation of will the Cooper Creek flood waters reach the Birdsville Track, the wait is over. I do not have confirmation from Patsy or Teraa, but it was reported on the ABC this morning that the have finally reached the Track... The report said that the track is still open for some time, until the flood waters reach a depth of over 600mm and then the Birdsville Track will officially be closed.

Lets hope that Teraa was on the spot for first hand pictures.

I will keep up updated.

Cheers

Sorry Fab72

No Rain, just the flood waters from back in January's rain.

Hi Stephen

Thanks very much for the continuous updates, it has help me (and a lot of others I suppose) a great deal with the planning of my next trip departing Brisbane on the 14th via Birdsville.

Do you know what the track is like heading down via Cordillo Downs to Innaminka?

Thanks again

Hi Lotzi
Unfortunaty I am unable to give any details for the Cordillo Downs Road, only the Birdsville Track section. I was speaking with Jade this morning (She is the Governess) and they have been watching it like a hawk. Jade said that it crossed over during the night and when they went down for a look first thing this morning, it was already deeper that their knees. A couple of pot holes in the road and water headlight level. She said that its current rate, the Track will be closed very soon. Jade is sending me some pictures of her and Patsy have a swim.

Will post them when they arrive.

Cheers

Hi Chris
Great photos of the area. Do not be fooled, the Marree Police vehicle is only parked there for the photo. Until this very moment the ferry in not ready and running , but give it a week and it could be up and running.

Cheers

Ok so the baby has arrived and the waiting is over.

Are we placing bets as to how long the water will stay and what will happen to it.

Will take the kids up in the school holidays for a look.

Many tourists up that way at the moment?

Hi Dean,
How long the water will last is very hard to predict, but they say the amount of water is equal to, or slightly larger that the waters on 1990, so it should be around for at least 6 months. It is still in its very early days, with the water still rising at a reasonable rate over the track. The Birdsville Track will remain open until the depth is over 600mm in depth. The way that it is rising, the Track should be closed within the next 24 hours.

There has been a steady flow of people heading up there to see the water, but now that the Cooper has finally crossed the Track, this is when the larger crowds will head north to see the Cooper and the ferry running.

Check my new post above with photos supplied by Jade.

Cheers

Steve - Having not traveled the entire BT all the way as yet - this year was/may be our first time. could you please explain the Flood bypass that is shown on the maps.

Is the Ferry on the bypass or the BT? If it is on the BT what is the bypass all about?

You will have to forgive us non locals :-)

We hope to be there late July early Aug if the Simpson is open to Birdsville.

Cheers Tony

Hi Tony
If you look at a good map of the Birdsville Track, you will see Etadunna Station on the Right hand side of the Track Heading North, just before where the actual Creek crosses the Birdsville Track. About 1 kilometre north of the homestead, there is a side track on your right. This is the wet weather and flood detour. From memory, about 35 kilometres from the main track, you will come to the far eastern arm of Lake Killamperpunna. Were the Cooper is not that wide, this is where the ferry is located.

Before heading out on the flood detour road, make sure that you head a little north and see the actual Cooper over the Birdsville Track and the old MV Tom Brennan.

Have a great trip and see the Birdsville Track the way that it is in about every 20 years.

Cheers
