In a couple of weeks I will be travelling from
Menindee to
Cooktown to meet cousins for a trip up
Cape York. I have five days to get there and the most direct track seems to be to
Wilcannia then to
Hungerford via
Wanaaring; then to
Eulo and
Cunnamulla. I am then on bitumen until
Barcaldine. I can stay on the bitumen to
Hughenden or go via
Muttaburra. From there I would like to go on the Kennedy Development Road to The Lynd
Junction etc...
Has anyone travelled the unsealed sections of this trip recently and can give me an update i.e. from
Wilcannia to
Hungerford to
Eulo,
Barcaldine to the Lynd
Junction?
Some of the road from
Wilcannia is closed but I may be able to go via
White Cliffs.
I don't mind travelling at 60 - 80 km/hr on dirt roads but I don't want to drive hundreds of kilometres on corrugations because of the time constraint.
I am in a Hilux 3l TD tray top and I am not towing anything.
Regards,
Bob

G'day Bob
I spoke to the Visitor centres at
Barcaldine and
Hughenden yesterday. Advice is that the best route to
Hughenden ex
Barcaldine is via the road to
Torrens Creek -now only 76 km unsealed. Advice re the Kennedy Developmental Road (we are going to Undara Volcanic NP en route to
Cape York) is that it is OK except if it is wet. Other advice for the Kennedy DR route is lower tyre pressures and drive at a sensible speed. We will be towing a camper trailer so sensible for us will be around 60kph.
Have a good trip
Cheers
John

Thanks to both of you. That's the way I will go. If I am a little slow on the dirt I can pick up time on the sealed roads. I wouldn't normally hurry but I don't want to mess up the others I am meeting at
Cooktown to go to the Cape. After that I have another month to take it easy and have a good look around.
Thanks,
Bob

Went (6 weeks ago) from
Adelaide-
Morgan-
Renmark, along dirt to
Wentworth-
Pooncarie-
Menindee on eastern side of river-
Wilcannia, again on the eastern side -
White Cliffs-
Wanaaring-
Hungerford-
Eulo.
Wilcannia to
Wanaaring section was closed on southern end - hence the bitumen detour to
White Cliffs.
All the dirt roads were in good nick - no corrugations or any other issues - apart from detours because of flood waters.
from
Eulo we went west to
Thargomindah, Noccundra,
Tibooburra,
Broken Hill,
Yunta,
Burra Adelaide - just coz we could - but mainly to see the Paroo River &
Wilson River in flood. Fantastic.
Cheers

Thanks Rick,
Sounds good to me. I was hoping to be able to go through
Hungerford. I went there a few years ago and had a great time.

Bob
