I'm heading up to
Tamworth on Saturday morning. Is the fastest way to take the Peats Ridge Road exit off the F3 and head up to
Singleton, or to take the F3 all the way to
Newcastle then head on the
New England Highway?

6 of one half dozen of another really
No matter which exit you take you will still have to deal with going via Cessnock, then the crawl through Branxton and
Singleton, then again to Musswellbrook.
Once you leave the F3 I would not expect to get there in record time no matter which way you go.
The
New England HWY is painful. Just wish the roads further north from the coast inland were better.

Straight up the F3...take the Cessnock/vineyard off ramp after Morriset, then across to Branxton, onto the
New England H'way and onto
Tamworth.
If your in the western Suburbs you could go up the
Putty Road from Windsor to
Singleton, then onto the
New England Highway.
Either way you'll get a fair bit of traffic till about Muswellbrook.
If you want to go from Peats Ridge to
Singleton, you'll be going via Kulnura, Laguna,
Wollombi, Broke, Mt.Thorley, and a lot of that is gravel and hilly and winding, but a very pretty drive.
Hope this helps.
Fred.

Thanks, looking at the map, the first route you've described looks a go-er!

Fred is spot on. Thru Cessnock and Branxton. A fair bit of mining traffic from around Singleton/M'brook but easy.

After probably 100 return
Sydney trips over 25+ years, assuming you are leaving from east of say Blacktown, .........
Shortest and quickest is off F3 to Peats Ridge exit then Broke Rd, turn left just north of Broke after
bridge for 15km, right at end onto
Putty Rd for 100ml then turn left onto Wallby Scrub Rd to Warworth then left onto Golden Highway ca 40km, turn off onto Edgerton rd at top of Arrowfield winery
hill, then right 20km later to Muswellbrook.
Hasn't been any dirt on it for 10 years, all sealed.
Saves 15km and 15 minutes over going through Cessnock which saves 15km and 15 minutes going to end of F3.
Local semis go through Cessnock, is also much simpler than Broke Rd, which I wouldn't recommend for a first timer at night.
Not much in it.
Via Cessnock 4hours 30 minutes travelling at speed limit. not stopping and no
Sydney traffic jams on exit.

Thats not entirely correct Mark......I assume you are going from Peats Ridge via
Wollombi to Broke ??
There is still a short section of dirt ( only 3/4 of a K long ) between
Wollombi and Broke..
If I was coming from
Sydney ( I live on the Central Coast, so know the area
well ) , for an easy trip, I would go via Cessnock, Branxton.....especially if I was towing...

IF I liived in Cessnock, or had to go to via Cessnock, or was towing I wouldn't go via
Wollombi either.
But going to Miuswellbrook and further on, Broke
Wollombi Rd is quicker and doesn't frustrate you as much.
The question was, "the fastest route"
Mark
