Hi everyone,
Long time lurker but this is my first thread.
My wife and I are looking at embarking on a trip this summer, originally our plan was to go to Tasmania in January for 3 weeks but unfortunately I wasn't able to take leave from work and so we've moved it to December. Our dog minder is unavailable for this time so we'll need to take our 12 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with us (she's part of the family anyway) which changes what we're able to do significantly. I've never been to Tasmania and have no idea how dog friendly it is, although most of the hikes and attractions seem to be in National Parks where dogs are a no-no. Can anyone tell me how easy it is to tour Tasmania with a dog and how restricted we'll be? I understand the west coast might be a possibility, but don't know what's interesting over there.
Another option we came up with was going over to the Eyre Penninsula in SA. It looks beautiful over there and we might get the chance
camp on
the beach and throw a line or two. If we go to SA we'll tow a 12' van, most of the caravan parks seem to be dog friendly and it seems there are a fair few free/cheap
camp areas outside national parks and alongside beaches. Our van is fully self sufficient for about a week away from town and we'll be towing it with a
well set up 4x4. My concern with SA is how hot and crowded it might be this time of year, can anyone give me info on what it'll be like?
We also have the time constraint that we need to be in
Melbourne on the 8th January and back in
Sydney by the 12th January, we'll probably leave
Sydney on the 10th of December or so. Thanks for any advice on the above, but if you think of a different destination I'm open to all suggestions,
Tim

Timothy,
From a purely selfish point of view I reckon you should do Tassie, as I'm thinking of heading there my self and a good and thorough trip report would be appreciated
........:)
Cheers.......Browny

Hi Tim,
We are from Tassie and I can assure you that Tasmania is very dog friendly.
WE are about to head off tomorrow to
Bay of Fires, that's up on the top NE Coast just out of
St Helens. There is a large
free camping area which is not a national
park and over the Christmas period holds about 500 or more
camp sites.
Free camping is common everywhere, basically if it's a flat spot big enough for your camp/van you would probably stop there.
When we
free camp it is common to leave all your stuff outside during your days out and not have to worry about it being stolen. This of course only applies in the more popular areas. Caution is recommended when out on your own.
There is plenty to do and three weeks will not be nearly enough.
The biggest thing to remember is that there are not many straight flat roads, allow plenty of time to travel over any certain distance.
We get rather annoyed when tourists insist on killing themselves on our roads.
Trust you have a very pleasant holiday where ever you go.

Hi Tim
Yes Tassie is a great spot, but if you want good warm weather, great fishing, having many secluded beaches to yourself, then head to the Eyre Peninsula. (As a Crow eater, I have to say this. LOL)
Like many parts of southern Australia the real hot weather should not have set in at that time of the year and there will be many
places where you can be the only person within
miles, just depends on where on the Eyre Peninsula you are thinking of going.
Cheers
Stephen

I think you have pretty much worked out the best option if you are stuck with your dog.... SA is a big place so you should find some good options.
Tassie is lovely any time of the year [so is SA].... so maybe leave the Tas trip til you can be more compact and free...
have fun

Hi Tim
While Tassie would be my number one choice, if only for a short time it is hard to justify the cost of getting there. We toured the Eyre Peninsular in January 2005, and we did get dome rather hot days inland, but each time we got hot, we went back to the coast where it was cool (this can vary depending on wind direction). When we got to
Elliston it started to rain, and was too cold to fish from the jetty at night. The Eyre has a lot to offer.

Thanks for the replies, it's always hard to choose where to holiday in Australia - there's too many great
places! We'll take all advice on board and make a decision, either way I think it'll be good fun.
