Gunbarrel overgrown in places ???

We were planning on taking the Gunbarrel to Heather Hwy down to Warburton then into Alice. (We are not doing the Old Gunbarrel Hwy)
I was told today that the Gunbarrel is a tight fit in places - OK for cars but not for our truck. The truck is a little wider than a Landcruiser and the height is approx 3.5m.
Can anyone give any recent information regarding the vegetation?
Rob

Hi Rob
Here is a selection of pictures from the Abandoned Section of the Gunbarrel, with the pictures descending from the Warakurna end to near the Heather turn off. Yes there will be a few sections were height could be an issue, but these sections are few and far between, with the denser sections after Jackie Junction and to the Heather Turnoff.

I hope these will show you what to expect.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Ray,
Yes they are great outback highways and it is not an understatement. It is when you start talking about roads and tracks that they look very different..LOL

This is the David Carnegie RoadImage Could Not Be Found

Now for the real duco scratchers - the Sydney Yeo Track, and yes this is what it is like.Image Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be Found

Here's a quick vid of the rarely traveled eastern section of the Eagle Highway I took with my camera in 2007. A highway it is not!!!!!!

Looking for adventure.

Stephen,
I've just checked up on the location of:
* Mount Samuel
* Jackie Junction
* Van Der Linden Lakes
* Lake Christopher
and all are on the Old (Abandoned) Gunbarrel Hwy.

We will be travelling:
1. from Wiluna to Heather Highway.
2. Down the Heather Hwy to Great Central Road
3. Into Yulara on Great Central Road

I am really interested in finding out if the track, No 1 above - Wiluna to Heather Hwy, is closed in with Mulga Trees.

Thanks for any pics,
Rob

Hi Rob,

We were along there a couple of weeks ago. Yes the mulga does crowd the track a bit in places. No real trouble for the Troopy but it may scratch-up the Fuso a bit. But hey, that's what its all about isn't it?

The photo below was a section between Jackie Junction and Mippultjarra Junction and was about as bad as it gets along there.

Rob, you can't get up the ranks without carrying stripes and you aren't a general yet. I can remember you didn't worry too much about the 80. LMAO

I guess that may mean you come straight across the highway now?

Hi Rob
Sorry for that, as I thought that you wanted details for the Abandoned Section. The next lot of photos will be from the other side then down to the Heather. Looking back at the pictures, there was only one section where the Mulga was dense and close on both sides of the track, and that was near the Tjirrkarli turn off. Most of the way there will be little to worry about. Makes sure that you see the setting sun from on top of Mt Beadell. There are many great camping spots along that section. The roads within the Wiluna Shire are first class and once you get near Geralton Bore, that's where the very good corrugations start.

So this is what you can expect, but in general a very easy run.

Cheers

Stephen

Stephen,
Once again, brilliant photos!
Approximately how long is the closed in section near theTjirrakarli Turnoff - meters or km?
How would we go trimming the bush to get through?

Hi Rob
Most sections many only go for a few hundred metres or so with the longest sections less than a kilometre. If you started clearing the closer vegetation, you find yourself permanently employed keeping all the outback track open..LOL

Like all corrugated sections, keep your tyre pressures low and you should have no problems at all. One special note that you can see in the picture west of Everard Junction. You will find many smaller native Poplar trees scattered along the tracks, where camels have dragged them down and eaten their tender foliage. As small as these trees and branches may seem, there timber is needle sharp and will go through your tyres like a hot knife through butter. Drive around them and not over them.

Cheers

Stephen

Rob
From what I can remember last year the gGunbarrell was OK..
Sure a bit rough and corrugated, but that is to be expected, once you leave the Wiluna Shire end, heading East..

There is a small section near the start of the Heather that slightly overgrown, (heading south) but even then it was not bad.

I do not know just how much that patch of scrub will grow in 15 months, but you should be OK.

Best to wait for more replies !

Cheers
Bucky
