Hi Bob,
There are many things to see no matter which path you take to
Adelaide.
We make it a habit of calling in to the tourist info centres when ever we stop in a town as this is one way to find out most of the attractions in one go.
Gilgandra has a great machinery museum right beside the highway.
The caves Van
Park at
Wellington is a good spot although I have never been there it is
well regarded as is a tour of
the caves there.
Dubbo is worth 2 or 3 days at least with the Western Plains Zoo and the Dubbo Goal.
Nice quiet van
park at Naromine according to one poster here yesterday, Check out the
lookout over the open cut
mine at
Cobar, someone also said there is a
mine tour conducted at
Cobar, would be interesting follow up on that one.
I have been to
Broken Hill twice and spent a total of 7 days there and still need to go back to see many things I have missed.
Silverton is a must and the van
park there is
well spoken of.
From
Broken Hill to
Flinders Ranges is a good run and not a long way out of your way. We stayed at Rawnsely Station when we went to Wilpeena. Good setup and reasonably priced about now as this is their off season. You get the pick of the sites in the off season as
well.
With all the rain we have had the wild flowers are blooming everywhere apparently so that will be something to see as
well. A trip to
Whyalla is a good run from the Flinders and there is an old Corvette from the RAN set up beside the
tourist info centre there as
well and a tour of the One Steel works is a worthwhile thing to do as
well.
A trip from
Broken Hill down to
Wentworth where the Darling runs into the Murray is a good one also and from there along the Murray to
Adelaide is also a pretty run especially due to the rain we have had throughout the south of the country. Make sure you visit
Victor Harbor when you get to
Adelaide and take the horse drawn tram ride out along the jetty. The train ride to Goolwah is also a must do.
There are several free camps we have used over the last couple of years. One good one is 63 Ks west of
Cobar 927. There is another 30 Ks north of West Wyalong on the Newell 847 in Camps Australia. Another good spot is beside
Lake Benanee 799 between
Balranald and
Mildura..
Bob I will give you my email address and you can email me yours if you wish and I will give you a more in depth itinerary as there is not a lot of space here to do it properly.
My email address is alanvale at midcoast dot com dot au
best regards, Bruce.
