Binns Track

It will be about a 3 day trash up the highway one way.

If you have 2 weeks for a one way trip then look at the binns track for an off highway experience.

You do not mention time of year, wants and wishes. There are lots of side trips to gorges etc and along the highway which could take months. It is really a winter touring area.

It took us weeks from Alice to Darwin; Devils Marbles, Davenport Ranges, Tennant Creek, Mataranka, Katherine gorges, Pine Creek, Kakadu. We went to Litchfield and Douglas Hot Springs on the way south again. We didn't do any fishing or hunting though; just sightseeing.

Hi Lux

As we were caravanning with quite a big rig, we were mainly following the highway, but did stay for two weeks near Old Policeman's Waterhole in the Davenport Range (off a section of the Binns track) due to a broken spring and courier problems. We could draw water from the waterhole and we had plenty of food and drinking water, even if the diet was getting a bit monotonous. We were out of fresh vegetables and milk by the end of the fifteen days. I always carry enough supplies for at least two weeks in case of breakdown or getting stranded by closed roads due to rain when travelling.

We carry all sorts of recovery gear but rarely need them; we are sightseers rather than into 4wd challenges. We travelled with a good supply of tools (with an F250 tray you can fit in a lot), and of course a good shovel, trolley jack plus bottle jack, as well as two compressors (one is sure to overheat or pack it in just when you need it pumping up eight tyres). We have never used our winch. Not in that area, but getting 7.5 tonne of rig out from sinking in the stones at Carawine Gorge in the Pilbara was hard digging and the only time we've used the MaxTrax.

When in Kakadu and Litchfield, we left the caravan in camp grounds and did day trips including 4wd tracks.

We left Alice on 6 July and after visiting and returning from Darwin we reached Daly Waters on 18 August, from where we headed towards Borroloola to continue our trip east. We did lose a bit of time with the delay at the Waterhole where we had only intended to spend a few days. Lots and lots of places we didn't get to along the way, particularly west of the highway.

Hi,
I came across your thread and this was really relevent to me.

I am planning to rent a Winnebago / 4WD from Darwin and drive down to Ayers Rock and back in 2x weeks. Planning the trip around August 2011.

Is this viable? Can the trip be done it 2x weeks or is it just too much driving? We would proably making stops here and there to take it easy with 4 days driving down and taking about 2 days in Ayers Rock than take about 6 days to drive back up to Darwin.

There were actaully 2x options. a) Rent a Winnebago b) rent 2x 4WD or a Van as there maybe about 6x-8x of us. Is there accommodation along the way like Caravan Parks? The reason for the Winnebago is that so we can be self sufficient and don't need to book in advance for accommodation.

Any help or suggestions I would be truely greatful.

Cheers,
Serene

from what ive researched you could go up and back in 6-7 days on main highway ....thatwill leave you a week of sight seeing ... you could do the trip in 2 weeks or 2 years there is heaps to see , check out binns track as iwas put onto it and looks great , stop in at tennant ck , aice springs darwin and theres heap of gorges and the likes kakadu national park etc etc have a read hru this thread and oull find heaps if you google what theyve wrote i did. personally im goig 4wd so we can get off beaten track and explore a bit rather than being stuck on main highway ... id try and add a 3rd week if you can i think uwould benefit from it , ive added it to mine

good luck
