Hello all,
Just got home from our 3 week, 7000km tour of duty from Adelaide, through Leigh Creek, Marree, Birdsville, Windorah, Longreach, Rockhampton, Maroochydore, Surfers Paradise, Tamworth, Bathurst, Canberra, Mildura and home. Would have liked a longer holiday but work commitments took priority.

Anyway, have complied a brief list of what I believe to be the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good.... WINDORAH! I seriously underestimated this town. I condsidered it as not much more than a rest stop and wasn't expecting much. Although sight seeing opportunities are limited, the town itself is very clean, green, well laid out and picturesque. Stuff heading north out of Birdsville, head ENE and visit Windorah.

The BAD.... Marree Hotel!!!! We booked our accomodation 10 months in advance. The gent who took our booking enstilled little confidence in us at the time of booking so I made a point of popping in and paying for it when I did a recon trip up to the Cooper Creek in June. When we arrived, the cabin we were meant to have had been re allocated to a bus load of tourists. The best he could offer us was an upstairs room (we weren't exactlly travelling light) and the three kids would have to share a room out the back on their own. The room out the back was dirty, unmade and stunk of ciggy smoke. In the end we settled for a 2 person cabin for 5 of us. Kids slept on the floor. No offer of a partial refund, (the town was booked solid so he had us by the proverbials) and when we questioned why the bus tourists couldn't be accomodated upstairs, we were told that "their arses were higher off the ground than ours".Well excuse me. No apology, and little care factor. Thanks for nothing Laurie.

The UGLY...The weather! Although I love the contast this great land throws at us and the opportunity to see arid lands in full bloom, it would have been nice if the weaher was a tad warner for us in Surfers nd Canberra. It rainned 4 out of the 6 days we were in Surfers (and I'm not talking a little sprinkle either - 350ml in 24 hours) and in Canberra, there was talk of snow.

Other random comments.... Qld drivers always speed.Adelaide drivers ARE the worst. Adelaidians are bleep s when it comes to respecting the use of UHF channel 40 for truckies, Holden Captivas can make it up Big Red...very easily I might add, averaged 8.5 l/100 over the whole trip, I want to live in Birdsville, Outback Spectacular is a must do for anyone considering it, Canberra - take your GPS!, Bathurst - more than just a race track, SW Qld truckies - super courteous, NSW speed cameras actually target black spots unlike SA ones which target revenue spots, Cooper Ferry - drop ya coins in the RFDS collection box, and last but not least........

Spend your tourist dollars in Outback Australia. These towns rely on the tourist trade and hence will generally welcome you with open arms. Make a point of driving the few hundred yards off the main roads when buying fuel, snacks etc...these businesses often miss out on the lion's share and the operators of these businesses know it so will treat you like royalty.

Thanks Mr. PH...will do once I get home/home. It's hard trying to type on a netbook at dial up speeds.

Interesting that the last poster on Trip Advisor had almost an identical story to us. Seems tour buses rein supreme and our six figure salaries still put our backsides lower than than others.

We won't let this put us off Marree. I love the town and will go back to the Oasis Caravan park next time. That too was basic, but what it lacked in facilites, it made up for in courteousness.

At the end of the day, we could holiday anywhere in the world, but we choose outback Australia.....everytime! (just had to do the theme parks this time to shut the kids up.)

I'd love to buy the Marree hotel....lots of potential if only it was under better management.

Ole Laurie is going to find himself in the poo if the tour buses start going elsewhere...that's for sure.

Agreed re Windorah - mainly because it represents such an interesting contrast with our home environs (Adelaide also) ........buildings designed to withstand shocking heat and harsh outback storms, a great little caravan park with low fees, huge road trains for the kids to marvel at, mustering helicopters virtually parked on front lawns (for the big kids to marvel at), a totally blind bloke selling fuel via credit cards at the only servo and the mighty Thompson / Cooper creek nearby (plus a neat little library too). We'll be back. Re the Marree pub - we gave up on that years back - a real outback fizzer - sounds like they are still putting in the same effort..... a pity.

Hello Quincy... we only went up the East side (Birdsville side). Had a long look at the west side but the common sense voice won over the adventurous voice in my head. We were 1000kms into a 7000 km trip so decided against the attempt.

So in answer to your question.... the middle track. Having said that, we went up with 28 psi still in the highway tyres and absolutley nailed it. No massive run up and only at about 20-30kmp/h.

The way the car handled the soft stuff on the top of Big Red, I am confident that the only thing stopping it from conquering the western face is lack of ground clearance under the sump.

Got to remember that even our loaded Captiva was probably still a tonne lighter than say a L/C or a Patrol.

Sounds like a great trip we also went to Surfers and got rained on 11 days out of 14. Good to see a bit of rain could do with a bit more down our way.
I would have to agree about Adelaide drivers. If you are driving in the incorrect lane to turn there is no way anyone will let you in, but do it anywhere else and the drivers will make a space for you. The best thing I like about Adelaide is when it's in my revision mirror. Ha Ha. Go the Captiva not a bad effort.

Cheers Scoof . :-)

Fab!
Great trip report mate!
We spent a total of about 3 hrs in Marree in July, and I have to say I would agree with your comments on the publican. We wandered into the pub and immediately felt it was time to go! So we did!

Windorah is a great spot, did you meet Merve the blind servo guy? Meals at the pub aren't bad either. It's a lot like a lot of other towns outback.... like Birdsville. Friendly people and a great atmosphere.

Glad you had a good trip!

Cheers

Brian

G’day Brian,
Yep, I’ve met Merve. Have to tell him how much you spent at the pump and then key in the amount in the EFT POS machine. Where else but the outback? Just love it!
Myles.
