Try a pop up toilet tent & a Jimmy's Thunderbox.

Good call Shaker.

We have the same.
We also take a small tub of lime, and sprinkle a bit on deposits, every time it is used.....
Don't smell like rises but it's a lot better than "el natural"..and if SWMBO can use it, then any one can.

I refuse to take the "porta-potty".
Just a waste of time & money

Cheers
Bucky

The best type and size is a Thetford 365.
This should be suitable for three days or so with both of you using it before it requires to be emptied. It would be a help if weewees were restricted as this will fill the holding tank more quickly but will just decrease the time before you need to empty it.

As far as "chemicals" are concerned, the only thing you need is "home brand" napisan powder. About one tablespoon is sufficient and the additive will not adversely effect the environment when buried with the rest of the contents.

As far as size is concerned, the Thetford 345 is more compact and a little easier to carry, but the 12 litre holding tank will mean more frequent emptying and the lower profile will result in your bum being a little closer to the ground.
Not all that bad, but the 365 has a capacity of 21 litres and the height is nearer that of a normal home toilet.

Either size is very good though and in my opinion, more acceptable to you and the environment than other alternatives.

A good place to view all the brands and sizes and with a very competitive price is BCF stores.

Bill.

Do you put the powder in the top tank to 'clean the bowl' as it flushes or in the bottom tank with some water?

No harm in putting a little in both if you wish.

I use about two medicine measures in the holding tank and don't bother putting any in the flushing tank.

Why a medicine measure???

Cause that's what I had:-)

Deals Direct have a 20 litre one for about $80 with postage. Sometimes they have a 10 litre one for about $20 less. No idea about quality or how price compares to others. Some of their stuff is pretty "cheap" but a cheapie might do you for short periods.

Deals Direct

I thoroughly endorse the recommendation to use store brand nappy powders; do a search here on sodium percarbonate. Safe to bury or empty into septics. We found it more effective than the expensive environmentally friendly toilet product. Regardless of what you use, you will need to empty a 20 litre one about every three days. It won't work quite as well at breaking down paper and solids without the road movement of a caravan on tour, but ours proved satisfactory when stationery for a couple of weeks.

The 20 litre (holding tank) from Big W is fine at around $85. After all, they're just a plastic tank to bog into.

Jimmy's Thunderbox has limitations. It's okay at places you can dig a hole to sit over, but some places don't permit that. And you can't bring it inside at night for the Good Lady Wife to have a twinkle during the night.

Cheers,

Jim.

We have found that anywhere that doesn't permit it has toilets anyway.

For the most part you're right and I understand what you are saying. One of our favourite places has a shower/toilet block and it can be a 400 meter walk from some campsites to get there. A Jimmy's just wouldn't work for us there.

But in most cases I agree with you. Just filling in a hole is easier than emptying and cleaning a porta dunny.

Hey, on another point, I'm sure it's you who sells boats. I'm looking at buying a Trailer Sailer, nothing too elaborate, just something to ty it out. I'm looking at something like a Careel C18. If you deal in such stuff can you shoot me a note to jimbest at bestoffroad dot net au and I'll give you a call if that's OK.

Cheers,

Jim.

We bought ours on special from Aldi's, but the same 20ltr model is available from Big W for under $90. They also have a good priced pop up shower tent.

We have had ours for over a year now and never go camping without it. Use the home brand nappy san It works better than the smelly chemicals.

Get the bigger 20lt model as it will last for 3 or 4 days

Another hint dont get the super expensive bio degradable toilet paper fromcamping stores just use Cottontelle.

We use Jimmy's thunderbox too and have an Oztrail pop up tent (it is easy to fold up!).

I like the Jimmy's as it is easy to set up, you don't need to empty it, it has a good lid to keep the flies out and it's easy to transport in the car. You can move it as required (usually after a couple of days).

I'm sure some would prefer a porta-potti style toilet but I can't stand the thought of either carting it around or emptying it, so we keep it simple!
