hi
i havent done from Melbourne to Echuca before but really enjoyed the trip between Echuca and mildura.
We camped at Christies Beach (free) just outside of Echuca right on the river, was fantastic.
We loved Echuca but didnt do any of the steamboats. On the way to Mildura we done another free camp at a place called Nyah, it was behind the harness racing club, again right on the river.
When we got to Mildura, we visited Orange World and done the train ride around the orchard, was very entertaining and informative, highly recommended. We also visited Perry Sandhills and Wentworth (where the Darling River meets the Murray to become the murray-darling. Im assuming it would be quite full at the moments.
I dont have much to add but those places we found quite nice.
enjoy your trip.

As you plan, look at taking a little extra time and travel back along the Sunraysia Hwy rather than the Calder, to my mind a far more scenic drive. If you have a look at a map you will see some logical jumping off points to a number of towns you might not otherwise visit.

Hope you have a good trip.

Rob.

Swan Hill is good...has one of the better recreated heritage towns that I've seen, which was put together from old properties etc in the district, and a great truck/tractor display. Great and interesting place to spend the best part of a day.

Back at Echuca, take a paddle boat lunch/dinner cruise, and be sure to visit the Holden museum.

At mildura go out to Redcliffs and seeBig Lizzie the marvelous (giant) tractor.
I think Doug T may have done a sunday history photo on it a while back.

You won't be short of things to do and see on that trip.

In Echuca go to the Beer Museum it is fantastic - you can get a beer can made with your name on it - and you will see things that have you going "oh, remember when......." the owner is a real character as well.

Drive up to the Barmah Forest and take a boat ride (unless it is flooded - I know there is a lot of water there at the moment) - when we went, at one stage we were travelling on the river ABOVE the ground level - it was quite strange - well worth doing. (a good camp to stay in Mildura is over the river at Buronga - over the bridge - turn left at the caravan park sign - good spot - right opposite the parklands where they have the New Years Eve celebrations, and you can watch from the river bank - and pity the poor suckers struggling with the traffic, while you just have to walk back to your van or whatever.

Hatt-Kulkyne is another good place - should be lots of water in the lake system - and (providing it is not flooded) you can camp there.

Out of Echuca drive up to Mathoura - Picnic Point is another good camp spot,
Christies Beach is good - but will probably be crowded with a lot of boaties - do a paddleboat tour on Lake Hume at Yarrawonga if you are heading near there -
Mildura - Woodies Rock Shop is well worth a visit -
boy - I sound like a tour guide for the area don't I - but I love the Murray and the towns and areas eather side of the river.
Have a good holiday

You're not too far from Mungo NP by the time you get to Mildura. I'd highy recommend a day there. Lots to see from Aboriginal remains, traces of old stagecoach tracks, old homestead, historic wool shed, goat trap etc etc. Not to forget the amazing landscape. There's a great circular drive around the park. Pick up the notes at the Parks office and follow the markers.
