Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a rough trot at the moment, and stressing out of my brain. I'm on a 24 hour 7 day roster, with days off in 16, add to that all the usual, family commitments, confusion, etc. I'm taking n extra 2 days, so i have some real time to myself.

Eveything has been driving me crazy, and need to get away from the world.

The only things i require are: somewhere beautiful, hopefully free from anyone else in the world, no mobile reception would be a huge plus, and within a days driving of the Hunter Valley.

Other than that, i have what i need, a few dozen beers, food, swag, plenty of water, hot shower, etc. somewhere on a nice river would be perfect.

Sooo... Camping gurus!!! Hop to it!!!

P.S. days likely to go are thurs-sun, so at least for the first 2 days i'll have some respite wherever i go :P

so please, HELP ME!!!

Dunn's Swamp on the western side of the Wollemi has a lovely large and spread out NSW Park campground, beside the water and plenty of pleasant walks. I hope it helps you relax, where ever you go.

Just read the bit about the hot shower. No amenities other than pit toilets at Dunn's, but you can bail water out of the lake and boil a kettle or two, take a big bowl and soak in it.

Hi Janek,
If you would like a really quiet time of it you could do a lot worse than Glory Vale reserve. Located about 30 kilometres north of Glouscester. No Power, No Phone coverage. Just perfect

Easy drive very peaceful. Cant use a boat there but it is right beside the Little Manning River which is OK to drink and this free camp is usually frequented by the grey nomads.

If you want some action like fishing or boating there is the Copeton Dam near Inverell We were there last week and it was virtually deserted. about 20 campers in a 100 hectare reserve. There is a fee but it is very reasonable. There are powered sites and plenty of unpowered sites. Bowling Alley Point between Tamworth and Nundle is another good spot for independent camping, not free camping, but the fees here are low as well. Located on a dam with heaps of potential campsites.

Could go on forever but there is a start.
Cheers, Bruce.

Wilco- The generosity of people never ceases to amaze me. i would love to, but i'm afraid i wouldn't be particularly good company. I will however, love to take you up on that sometime soon!

And as for what i want to do, it's just sink a bunch of cans and appreciate the simpler things in life, so would prefer not to go out on the boat, but am open to the possibility of getting there using the boat if this makes any sense.

barrington tops sounds great, but am afraid of too much traffic. Have looked at abercrombie river, and this looks good, and seems to have some 4wding i i feel like it.

However, grey nomads arent a bad thing, i've had many a cup of tea sharing stories with them, and love it. I might be young, but the 'travelling elders' are always good to chat to and forget about the world. but again, solitude is the goal.

P.S. Endless thanks for the time and effort going into these suggestions.

Hi Jane

I'd recommend a trip for a couple of days to the Mummel Gulf National Park. Relatively close to Newcastle, and well out of everyone's way. Easy access from Nowendoc, but keep an eye on the weather.

You can enter via Nowendoc, and exit via the Dick's Hut Fire trail to Wauchope and back to newcastle

Hi Janek

WE have been to a little Nature Reserve on a tributary of the Macquarie River a bit north of Wellington. Cant recall if there were any facilities but the river had nice pools and rapids. Turn off is to the west about 7km north of Wellington at 3 Mile Flat. You drive in maybe 5km (and go through a couple of gates) to near Ponto Hill. Its in Camps Aust so gets a bit of use so cant say how busy it would be.
Another option is Goulburn river NP eat of Gulgong where there is quite a big campground with good pit toilets. The drive in is a bit more challenging though not difficult and after this years rain there should be plenty of water in the river. Probably find us grey nomads in both places.

Take care,

Val

Hi Janek.

A very nice spot is Myall Lakes just north of Hawks Nest, and you have some boat based camping spots, otherwise you are between the lake and the beach with 4WD access.
This is one of our favourite spots when things just get to much.

Cheers

If you want peace and solitude, then Goulburn River nat park is the go.....go to the 2nd camp area ( 4wd access ) and even on a weekend, unlikely to have many (or any ) other people there..

Abercrombie, as said is another...

Dunns Swamp...top spot, but won't be quiet and secluded..

We use to go to Dunns reguraly, but because it has been on getaway and other shows its now very crowded. You would be better going to Lake St Clair near Singleton. Much nicer grassy(Dunns is bare dirt with heaps of ants) camping spots on about 50ha. And the Fishing is superb.

Coolah Tops ..... pretty close & handy ....

Great for beers, books & bbq ..... and peace & quiet .......

Not always a lot of easily accessible ground water but plenty restful.

Access from your end via the logging track if its open - for some 4x4 fun if you want.

That end of the Tops was closed in Oct last year ( lots of fallen trees ) and the speed at which nat parks gets things done, would probably still be closed....

Great area though ...

Perhaps you could take a few days off and do some volunteer work in one of the flooded areas in Queensland and help some people who are far more stressed than you.

The swamp is nice, but can be crowded these days. Years ago when no one knew about it it was popular with the locals for water skiing.

How about Newnes?, I've not been there, but it is on my list.

Hi Janek,

Have you had any luck??

I am on the same page as you - over worked, in the Hunter and about to add Uni to the mess...so trying to get out tonight till Sunday with the dogs!

I've been trawling the net for about 2 weeks trying to find a quiet lakeside/waterside camp ground that are happy to have dogs too...so far have only found a handful who allow pets.

I had a look at my mate's Camps Australia Wide 5 book yesterday...if you can get ur hands on one they're pretty informative there are quite a few spots between dungog/barrington and scone region. I found the campsite search on this website extremely helpful!!

There are a few places around Munmorah State Park - just watch Birdie Beach its known for nudie's..there's a place called Freeman's and Frazer camp grounds however they would most likely be busy and sometimes there are a few unsavoury's that turn up. Other than that you could try Great Lakes National Parks which are my absolute fave and also the Olney and Watagans State Forest. You can access the beach by 4wd on Stockton Beach and also North Hawks Nest Beach however beach permits are required.

If you're near a Visitor Information Centre around the hunter they also have brochures and maps of the National and State Park areas around our way.

Good luck I hope you find a nice spot and I will continue trying to find mine!!

Cheers,

Robyn

Further to my post I just found my haven...

Ferndale Park
http://www.barringtons.com.au/ferndale/

Hot & Cold Showers, Flush and pit toilets.
Firewood and blocks of ice for sale at the owner's homestead.
Pick your own camp site anywhere along the river.
150 acre farmlet on the river just north of Dungog - no need to book just turn up and set up for approx $5 per person per night...sounds like a great price considering National parks charge at least double that!
