Hi all, Wondering if anyone would like to recommend a place to stay in Coober Pedy (have looked at tourist sites but would like a recommendation) There's 5 of us- 2 adults,3 kids. We were hoping to get something underground. Anyone care to tell me their experiences?

Hi Liz,

We recently stayed at Riba’s Underground Camping Park (Lot 1811 William Creek Road Coober Pedy 08 8672 5614). They have a deal that includes a mine tour.

We just layed out a tarp & put our mattresses & sleeping bags on the tarp. It's a little dusty but a great experience !

Don't bother trying to set up a tent underground as the ground is "rock" hard.

We all enjoyed the mine tour (4 adults & 5 kids ranging from 3-9)

Thanks for the feedback. When you're going somewhere new it's nice to have someone else's advice.

We stayed at Ribas too. Was great. We were in a caravan, though, so didn't stay underground. Mine tour was good, and meeting all the backpackers was great. The showers are included in the price (most in Coober Pedy cost extra due to lack of water). The showers are locked during the day though to stop outsiders coming in. You have to use the "Thunder Dunny" during the day. It's actually a good, clean flushing toilet in a corrugated tank. Its better than it sounds.

Thanks for your eply. I looked this one up on the net and it does look interesting! We've got a caravan too but I guess the kids could have a look at the T.V in the underground room. Not ideal for the educational trip that we're going on but still....

Liz, can recommend the Underground Motel 08 8672 3330, have stayed there twice now, very friendly, and huge two bedroom underground rooms. Have a great time.

We too stayed at the Underground Motel. 2 Adults 3 kids cost about $150. We should have booked earlier and we would have got a better room. We had a double 2 singles and a trundle but still had plenty of room. The facilities were OK without being spectacular but it was a really friendly place with a great view (hard to believe from an underground motel but check it out and you'll see what I mean) over the Nth East area of the town.

Umoona mine tour was very interesting. And the chinese take away was reasonable for tea.

Have a great trip.

Stayed in the Underground Motel a month ago and it was lovely. When we get back that way again we'll be staying there for sure. Cost us $130 from memory (2 adults + 2 kids).

Ditto John + Dunc's comments - cool, clean, friendly and comfortable.

Cheers

Hi Liz,

Last year we stayed in Coober Pedy, at the Opal Cave Backpackers Room Only: $64. It was just the three of us there, my wife, my 5 year old son and I. It had a kitchen and was extremely secure. Only issue was showers and toilets were a fair way away.

This year we had a cabin in the Big Four Oasis Tourist Park
Hutchison Street
Telephone: (08) 8672 5169
Freecall: 1800 060 541
Deluxe Ensuite Cabin: $80.10 per night (Big4 Discount)

Liz, I reckon the best place to stay in Coober Pedy is out of town along the Anne Beadell Hwy before you get to the Mabel Creek Station. Piles of slag and backpackers aren't my scene.Bob
