Travelling around Central Australia in July with a group of 20. Some of the group are keen to visit Lake Eyre when we are in Coober Pedy. Just wondering if anyone can suggest the best way to do this. Looks like flying over might be expensive as we are all family groups of 4. Is there much to see from the ground if we drove out? Is it something that can be done as a day trip from Coober Pedy?

Hi,

Depending on which way you are travelling, and the amount of time you have you can go from Cooper Pedy to William Creek. Then to Halligan Bay on the western side of the lake.
Also from William Creek you can go towards Marree and see Lake Eyre South from a road side stop. From there travel towards Marree again and just at entrance to town turn left to Mulroney Station.

Muloorina has a great camping spot on the side of the Frome Creek with water coming from a bore at the homestead. Plenty of bird life and even the cattle and horses come in for water there.

No shower but a flushing toilet and around $8-00 per night (honesty box). Travel 45 ks to Level Post Bay on south eastern corner of the north lake and you have seen all from ground.
On news last night it is estimated that Lake Eyre may fill to around same level as 1974 so it will be worth it. With the amount of late rains if the Macumba and Neales are running along with the Warburton it will be interesting.

Cheers and enjoy. From a past employee of Muloorina Station. P&J

Hi, a day trip from Maree is feasible at 200 km return taking 5 hours with photo stops etc. At Level Post Bay the salt will merge in with the sky depending on how hazy it is. Go to this link in Places to see pix. Muloorina to Level Post Bay Track. It's really 2WD to Muloorina and the track onwards is Magna friendly to say the least!! Alas inflation has hit the outback with a 1 hour flight over the lake going to $250 this year, up from $190 in early 2009!!...............W

3 of us towing standard caravans so thinking we will need to leave those at Coober Pedy before we leave the sealed road. Do you know of somewhere closer to Lake Eyre (but still on sealed road) that we can unhitch and set up vans while we go exploring? Also, how many hours to drive from Coober Pedy to Marree? Nancy

Warrie,
Just looked at the photos of track to Level Post bay. Their great and brought some memories back of the days I drove mini mokes and rode horses on that track whilst mustering. Thanks mate. Cheers P&J

Nancy,
Sorry no tar up in that country. Be devilish and forget tar roads and enjoy the dust. If you don't you will be sorry you did not do it. Cheers P&J

Firstly hi P and JM, there are more pix of the track in William Creek taken in the early 80's with a 60's model Valiant showing how it's done.

To Prado Grande, it's 372 km from C. pedy to Maree and you need a day to do it as there's so much to see. Check out the Ooodnadatta Track Trek. But if you came up from Port Augusta to Leigh Creek then Lyndhurst you only have 80 km of good quality 2Wd dirt from Lyndhurst to Maree..................W

Thanks for the info. We will be heading south after leaving NT so will make sure to set the alarm clock for an early start so we get to see everything. Cheers, Nancy
