post in early July and you will get the answers you need,
Top Spring is nice with grassed camping and pub, Jasper Gorge is also nice with a few small spots you can call into ............
Road will most probally be cut at the moment at Dashwood crossing and with the weather atm it probally will get worse, it also cuts at Jasper with parts washed away 2m deep and NOT passable, also boggey sections west of Jasper that are NOT passable until dry .....
From Top spring to Timber Creek is a very nice drive with various spots you can catch Barra so you will enjoy it.
Cheers

Thanks Joe - will check again before departure, but working out the itinerary and deciding whether to go that way to the Kimberley via Kununurra or do the Tanami twice - cheers.

depends if you have been to Kunnanurra, if not you get to go through Jasper, see Timber Creek and the mighty Vic River, Ord River dam, Kunnanurra and even Bungles if you want, really nice drive with heaps to see and do...

Did that trip (Buchanan highway) a couple of years ago was our first big trip with the T-Van and was really pleasantly surprised to be able to camp on the grass at Top Springs and partake of the hospitality at the pub. The road at that time was as good a dirt road as anywhere and very little traffic.

Have fun Cheers,

Nory

Hi Scoey,

I travelled this road late last year. See mine and other comments on this thread:

Buchanan

There's so much to see in the area from Kununurra to Dunmarra that I think it would be far better than travelling the Tanami twice.

let me know a few days ahead and i will give you some gps locations for the Dashwood crossing and Jasper gorge, some nice barra have been caught at both locations ..... few "secret" tracks hahaha, oh and say hi to "Pauline" at Toppy
Cheers

ps dont know what kind of 4wding you are into but just past Vic River Downs (VRD) station you can take a left turn, it takes you in past a small community called Yarralin (lived there) and on to Humbert River Station and then on further into parkland tracks, sorry cant remember the details/names but will come out around Timber Creek ..... tracks dependant on prior wet season so may not be repaired by then but......

In August last year we drove from Timber Creek to Bullita Camp ground in Gregory NP - good dirt road. Did a nice day drive around the Bullita Stockroute.

The interesting bit then began - down Humbert Track to the Top Humbert Yard, where we camped. Only 51 km but a good days drive (towing off-road trailer)

Next day down the Wickham Track to camp site on the Wickham River near Fish hole Yard - only 64 km but another good day.

Up the track along the Wickham River, past 'New Humbert' Station and Yarralin (a dry community with millions being spent on housing etc.. - at the entry on top Spring side there were thousands and thousands of VB cans) then to Top Springs. The track along the Wickham river was slow and overgrown and would be prone to wash out in the wet. Total for day 164km.

A great detour between Top Springs and Timber Creek. However, quite remote and some difficult spots.

Could be shortened by taking the Humbert Track from Yarralin to Top Humbert Yard, rather than going via Wickham River and Wickham Track.
