Hi,
We will be in
WInton in a couple of weeks time and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the caravan parks there. Which one do you recommend? We have 3 children and plan to stay there for probably 3 nights.
Thanks!

I recommend the Pelicans Rest CP.
We recently stayed at the Matilda CP and in my opinion it's going backwards.
Cheers

Hi, we passed through the
Winton area in late June of last year. We were traveling the "long way" from
Sydney to our holiday house in
Port Douglas. Our trip was a little complicated in that we were traveling with our 13 year old beagle (and our 13 year old daughter), we needed to find dog friendly locations.
Anyway we stayed at
Carisbrooke Station, it is about 80kms south of
Winton. Here is a link to their website:
http://www.carisbrooketours.com.au
The station is about 55,000 acres in size, with stunning scenery. We stayed 2 nights in the workers quarters but they also offer camping with or without facilities. We did some 4WDriving around the station and also visited
Lark Quarry, only a short drive away. I am sure that a visit there is on your list, but if not you MUST visit. For me it was a highlight of our entire trip and I am sure your kids will love it as
well. The owners Charlie and Penny are very friendly, give them a call if you have any questions.
My city princess daughter really enjoyed the station experience and even got to drive Dad's car for the first time ever! After
Winton we then went on to
Karumba Point for Barra 'n chips.
Cheers Paul

Hi Amandaj
We stayed a few days at the Pelicans - right in the main street of town, so it was an easy walk to the Matilda Centre and other attractions. Bathrooms were donga style and not the best, but the water was hot and everything worked and the park was priced accordingly. Just hold you breathe while showering in the sulfurous smelling artesian
Winton water. When we were there they took cash only - no cards accepted. Despite fuel stop in the park's name, it was not selling fuel when we were there in 2009. See the review here:
Pelican CP reviewed on Badger's
We also did a day trip to
Lark Quarry - one of the priorities of our trip.

Another for Windermere Station, Andrew, Emma and their kids were great and even tho its mainly a cattle station they get orphaned lambs from their neighbour for the kids to feed.
Its not far from town but you feel you could be
miles from
Winton. They have a large outdoor cooking area, Hot showers and power for vans (we camped) and our daughter (3 and 1/2 at the time) fell in love with their little house dog Pokey, Our girl is 5 1/2 now and still asks when are we going back...next year at this stage....
Have many good memories sitting around the campfire there especially at sunset.
Good steaks at the
Tattersalls hotel and a great butcher in
Winton also.
Cheers

Have just called Windermere, we had our heart set on staying there and sadly they said they are only open to group bookings which is weird because their website doesn't say that...looks like we will be staying in town at a crappy caravan park :(

Another vote for Windermere. We worked there in 2009 for six weeks, and Andrew, Emma and the kids are terrific. Wonderful place, decent amenities,
good camp kitchen and not far at all from
Winton-also on the road to
Lark Quarry which is a must see. The Age of Dinosaurs had just opened when we were there and that is
well worth a visit too. emma does whip cracking for the campers there most evenings, there is a
camp fire every night, and visits to the calves and sheep for the kids.
In 2009 they had 6 powered
camp sites and quite a few unpowered ones too. They have done quite a bit of work on the
camp kitchen area and amenity blocks since we were there.
If you do end up staying there, say hi to Emma & Andrew from
John & Julie.
