Is the rumor true about Kakadu??

Hi everyone from Daly Waters,

I've heard rumor that once you pay your $25 per person entry fee to Kakadu and your camping fee per night. That you just can't take yourself off on the walks to Jim Jim, Ubir and other wonderful sites. Rumor has it that you now have to pay a tour fee ontop of the entry fee. Does anyone know if this is correct or not?

Kind Regards
Andrea

Here is the Park Passes section of the website, and FAQs...

Doesn't appear to be charges to do the walks?

Hi there Landy,

Thanks for the link. From what I can see there doesn't appear to be any fee's for the walks. I will ask in at Katherine tomorrow just to be sure. Love the Landy lable. We came up here in 4 Days from the Gold Coast driving our landy and the old girl didn't miss a beat!!

Hi Andrea

It certainly doesn't sound right, however to be sure, contact the park through the website and raise the question. When they reply, please post the result back here to complete your thread.

i think you can pay for guided tours ,but that is optional,
also you only pay camping fees if you stay in a serviced campground, otherwise there are many many free good campsites all over the park ,but they have limited facilities

Hi Edwin

Apart from just a few free camps with no amenities ($5pp for ones with just a pit toilet), you can with the permission of Rangers camp in other agreed places.

You pay for organised tours and only organised tours are allowed to go to some areas in the park , just another way to create a "one Australia" not.

C'mon Alloy, drawing the long-bow there mate...

Gold Coast is free to visit also, but try getting into Sea World for nothing!

Cheers...

Landy , its got nothing to do with long bows , the GoldCoast or SeaWorld , ,,its all to do that certain sections of a National Park that you are already charged a fee to enter [what do we pay taxes for] has then closed areas that you cannot visit unless you pay another fee to an organised "tour" operator , bit like saying to the people of the NT if you come to Sydney you have to pay a fee to stand on the steps of the Opera House.

Hi Alloy - which places in Kakadu are open to tours only? We went to heaps more places than the tours take people, and i am not aware of any to which tours are permitted and self drive tourists aren't.

We are currently in Kakadu. Walks are free if they are open. Found some closed due to "damage from the wet".

Have to pay for a boat ride to get to Twin Falls.

Paying $5 a person for "campsite" such as Gungural is a rip off.
Currently at Mardugal and although it is $10 a person it is quite a decent campsite.

Lookouts are lost cause due to burning off.

But the cliffs, waterfalls etc are spectacular.

Off to Jim Jim today

Hey Alan,

Do they still allow people to make their own way to Twin Falls instead of having to take the boat?

I know when we went in 1999, people made their own way by swimming, lilo's or blow up boats.

Cheers.

Hi David

Swimming to Twin Falls is now not recommended as not guaranteed croc safe. The boat ride was relatively cheap, guide answered questions and gave plenty of information, and we appreciated the ride. He left a small two way so we could call for him to come back and pick us up after our walk to the falls.

Hi Alan

Mardugal was my favourite of the Kakadu campgrounds. It was also the least busy as for some reason most people went to the crowded Cooinda caravan park instead. Gunlom and Muirella were also very good campgrounds, with an abundant supply of lovely fresh water, whereas at Mardugal water is carted in to the tank. Putting the $5 pp charge on the campgrounds like Gungural that have only the pit toilets and used to be free may be a bit steep, but it was a convenient place for one night and to leave the caravan while visiting Maguk. Merl near Ubirr was hard to find a place to fit a big rig, and it is famous for droves or huge mosquitoes day or night. A very busy campground.

You must take their boat ride. Currently twin falls is shut as is half the places we went to go. Barramundie gorge, Koolpin Gorge. even the walk at Mardugal is closed.

There is an area near yellow waters which has been given exclusive access to a tour group. It is advertised as such at the campground.
