Just bought a used PWB UT16 manual hand winch rated 1.6T lift 2.5T haul . Looked for spare shear pins but gone missing. Seems like most of these on the market are clones and probably identical.

Does anyone have a couple of spare pins they would be willing to part with?

Material: Solid Brass Rod, Diameter: 7mm, Length: ~29mm

Apparently new ones come with 6 spares hidden in the handle but if you want to purchase them you have to buy a 10 pack for $60!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brett.

Brett,
Just go to a steel supply place and buy 7mm brass rod and cut some to length. Would be the cheapest way.

I tried to buy brass rod recently from metal suppliers in SW Sydney. Impossible.

Could get it on special order, minimum length 3m, $$$$$$$$

$60 for a 10 pack is the way to go.

Try a hobby store, you can buy short lengths of brass rod fairly cheaply, I used to buy it all the time,
cheers,
Dave.

Hi Dave,

Had a look online. Seems they have almost every size but 7 mm.

But if it comes down to it I will buy some 5/16 rod and size it down.

We solved this problem with our Wreckers in the Army years ago, they would shear just when you needed to put a decent load on them !The shear pins were lathed down (reducing winch capacity) to supposedly stop the SWR from flattening on the roller that led from the fairlead. We substituted a high tensile bolt . No more problems. You would be surprised at what winches will take. SWR's will sing before they break, providing their in good condition. Of course I am not advocating you do the same, as Recovery is a specialised job & not for the inexperienced.

Hi
Brett
Tyr a welding place for a 1/4 inch brass welding rod and cut to size, that was all we done years ago for the local SES toyo winch. Some of the sheer pins are tapered as well if tyring to knock out, if tight one way try the other way
Cheers

Hi Charlie,

Trouble is 1/4 inch is smaller than 7mm (no taper).

Maybe they chose this size because no one else has it?

I also suspect that brazing rod is a much softer composite.

That's ok Brett it was just a suggestion as a work around.
1/4 inch is about 6.5mm
