Hi all,

The wife and i were thinking of heading north from Adelaide to visit Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice springs via Coober Pedy mid September. Can anyone update us on if the mouse plague is causing issues at any of these places?

We'll be in a tent so if it's bad will delay it and go somewhere else in the meantime.

Any info will be useful thanks.

Chris.

just put a padlock on the Waeco and the key around your neck - the buggers'll do anything for a slab of cheddar

Waeco lives in the car (as will the rest of the food.) guess it'd be a good test to see if all the seals are working into the car.

I had read it wednesday and checked it again today but didn't cover where I was going. (i also did forum search and google search) They were more north so thought I'd clarify for where I am wanting to go. I did miss the kings canyon follow up post thhough so that answers that part. Lots if them.

Wed be in the more tourist parts so wasn't sure if it is better there than creekside camping etc.

Send me a message after 4 September and I'll be able to tell you what they are like in the West Mac ranges.

You won't be staying exactly where I'll be camped, but should be a reasonable indication of the Alice and West Mac ranges region.

Uluru and Alice are not affected. As of mid July, I didn't have any problems in the Flinders, Coober, Dalhousie, Mt Dare, The Oodnadatta Track, Kings Canyon or the George Gill Range about 20 km north of Kings, or in The Alice. Camped on the Georgina near Boulia and saw a few but no real issues and it certainly wan't plague conditions. Didn't have any issues around the country at the intersection of Birdsville/Cordillo Downs intersection (Moonda Lake) or on the Cooper near Innamincka.

The bird of prey, owls, feral cat and snake populations are fat and happy. I think it seems to be more of an issue around the Simpson and Strezlecki areas at present although there was a post stating that they were an issue once again at the Birdsville town area (Locals were dealing with that though)

Struck the worst Mozzie plague I've ever experienced along the Oodnadatta in April this year but couldn't find a single bloody insect in July. Cold seems to have killed them all.

In my opinion, I think you'll be right.

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick
I dont dispute your reply but I find it totally amazing as I was through nearly all those places (Exept Birdsville etc.) right up to Katherine, between April & May this year and we were inundated by the little buggers, infact in Alice (Sturt CV Pk & Heavytree Gap Tavern) they were climbing the walls & biteing anyone with open shoes. At William creek we were stomping on them and set up a trap with a bucket of water and bait on a string over the top & caught about 48 of the buggers. What a turn around!!!!
Cheers Colin.

Yeah Colin I'd been hearing about everyones difficulties in the months leading up to our sojourn and was expecting the worst. We stopped out at Anna Creek for a couple of nights, Duff Creek, Dalhousie, Uluru, In the bush near Kings and at the Big 4 in Alice and had no issues. You could certainly smell the dead ones at the flight booking centre at William Creek but we had three tents and three swags on the ground and the only place we actually saw any was on the banks of the Georgina and that was only about half a dozen skipping about the camp after scraps. The boys took care of a couple with the shangii (boys will be boys) Absolutely nothing in Alice and surprisingly not a peep by the Cooper near Innamicka.

Stephen L was a couple of hundred south west of us on the birdsville track and he was swamped with them at one point. Can't explain it. The Landy was up that way at the same time so I wonder if he had any issues ith the blighters?

Cheers Mick

We were in Alice February to July and stayed at Stuart caravan Park . Never saw one mouse in the park in this time. Yes they were seen on the roads and other places out of town but never a problem in our van.

in april we could not buy a mouse trap, even if we offered $1000 there were just none available in Alice Springs.

Must be a lot of happy birds & snakes there.

In Stuart caravan Park we killed 20-25 of them just in our site alone.

Chris,

Unless you, or one of your fellow travellers are absolutely terrified of the little rodents, just go ahead and plan your holiday and don't worry about something that may not be an issue.
The chances are they will not be about in any great numbers, especially in the places you mention.

We were camped in the Cooper Creek area over the Easter break and hardly knew there were mice about, except for the hole in an Easter egg left out in a bowl from the night before.

When one is camping you have to accept that sometimes you may need to share the environment from time to time, whether it be mice, locusts, ants, flies, or any other insect or fauna in the area.

The wifes prety afraid of anything. Spiders, snakes etc. But we accept as you mention to share the environment. A couple of mice running here and there is fine, but wouldn't cope win hundreds of then trying to climb your legs while sitting around the camp etc.

I figured major camping places like big 4s and the other holiday parks may be better due to enough people around to reduce the problem, but thought I'd ask the good people of this forum how they had gone recently.

I figured since it was at it's worst a while ago it would have reduced a fair amount by now.

At this point we'll proceed as scheduled.

Thanks for your info.

Sand Man (SA)

while i agree with you generally having lived through mice plauges they can be hugely distructive and more than just a nusiance when in large numbers

they could esily destroy 100s of dollars of equipment when camping chewing holes through tents swags and anything else - not to mention vehicle or accessory wiring

I've read some of the previous posts about that. Car wiring, car computers etc being destroyed. Even cooked engines due to chewed coolant pipes. One suggestion was to leave the bonnet up so there's no warm spot. Not probably the best solution in a populated area due to theft etc. Was one of the reasons I also asked how it is now as opposed to a couple of months ago.
