Have been in Caravan now three days. Purchased Gympie and came to Racecourse to go over under and around the Van and Land Cruiser. Ready to hit the road now after stocking up. Have looked at Camps 6 book and thought I would start easy and head to Tin Can Bay and then Rainbow Beach before heading upwards towards Bundaberg. No experience towing a caravan but plenty of history towing a trailer. Any comment on what the type of park overs at both places are like. Thanks Brian

Not sure about Tin Can Bay, but at Rainbow we like the one behind the pub, we also enjoy camping at Inskip Point if you have enough battery power.

Bargara is also a nice spot east of Bundaberg.

If you're not in a hurry to get to B'berg and enjoy fishing, we enjoy Hedleys on Kaurie Creek along the Tinnanbar Road.

Lovely sandy beach setting, good fish - mozzies can be bad at times but DEET fixes that. Mid week you can be by yourself.

We have been on the road for 17 days and camps 6 book has been next to useless on several occasions so I hope you're not relying on it, as you're going to need the internet and other books if you want to stand a chance of finding close to all the sites.

Look up Mudgee in that book there's just one listing for the showground (our first stop) toilet block has big holes drilled in the walls for the benefit of peeping sicko's and cost $23.10 for a night

Yet there are nice caravan parks to stay at in Mudgee for only $4 a night more, but not according to camps 6, it's the showground or nothing!

We are now in Caloundra and camps 6 is virtually just maps and nothing more, we have to use the net to find places. We thought that book was going to be the best thing since sliced bread for an around Australia trip. It only took 2 days to figure out it is not that great.

Anybody got any good places to recommend for a big rig around Caloundra?

Cheers Nigel

Nigel, are you aware that RACQ has a very comprehensive caravan park directory? Camps have never pretended to cover the caravan park segment. They are freebie and cheap parks only.

There are three parks in Tin Can Bay. One is a Top Park and pretty full most times so that gives you an idea of the standard. Another is close to everything and is named after a laughing Australian bird and has not had any money spent on it since it was built in the 60's. It is used mostly by people who can't get into the Top Park, and the last one which is in the best position, has the most rude and angry owner/manager I've ever met.
Good choice really.

rememember none of these books are anygood on their own..at best they are treasure maps vaguley showing spot X.

The RACQ caravanpark book is all fine and beaut but it only lists parks that have paid to be there...there are plenty it does not mention.

The caravan parks assn book has lost more init and it is free at most tourist information centres...and it does have a list in the back of parks that are not member and did not pay for a listing.

Ya realy need to have a fist full of the things and compare them to each other.

And there are some sites listed in some of the camping sites books that are not correctly listed.

The rest area just south of Bowen is listed as an overnight stay option in some books... but you drive in there and it is abundantly clear that overnighting is not permitted and it has been that way for years.

The tourist information centres can be a big help, with both local knoweledge and a huge mass if information available.

and remember mobile broadband is your friend.

cheers
