Entered into the 4WD zone from Racing Zone! Need a club to ride along and camp

Hi,

I recently trade-off my fav chrysler 300C 5.7L V8 for 2011 Jeep grand cherokee 3.6L V6 laredo without air suspension. The SUV is wider than new nissan patrol and std ground clearance of 218mm , dep 24 degree and approach 26 degree angle and breakover of 19 degree.

I am new to 4WD and its my first SUV. My love for camping and near future kayaking and biking forced me to get this 4x4 within my budget. As the car is new and i am inexperienced, i dont want to jump into any trip where car damage chances are there or water fording without putting the snorkel.

Need your advice in filtering out 4wd clubs in sydney, NSW who does Level 1 and 2 trips as frequent as the higher level ones. My whole idea is to ride in groups, meeting new people, learning and most importantly enjoy the outdoor thru camping, biking, kayaking, bushwalking, swimming etc. We are 28yr old young couple, new to the country and looking forward to explore it and capture in my SLR.

Thanks in advance.

Sandeep

Hi Tony, Just wondering if they do trips often for grade/class 1-3. My vehicle is new, unmodified yet and would like to not to get any major damage. what are the important add-on required for safe offroading. I can think of snorkel is the first to go for.

Most Clubs do all sorts of trips and grades, from standard to the tuff trucks,

Check the site and find a club that interest you or is close, then visit their website or go to a meeting, you can then see if they suit your needs.

Most 4WD clubs are not out there to damage vehicles, most 4WD Clubs are touring Clubs that enjoy getting there, treading lightly, so they can go back again and show their grandchildren.

Also most clubs provide training at no, or very little cost to members.

Sandeep,

Not sure that a snorkel would be the first item on the shopping list.

Bull bars, 2" lift and decent tyres, come to mind.

If you are doing a lot of dusty roads and some water crossings, then maybe a snorkel.

I checked the factory tyres which are kumho tyres mainly for highway and 20% on sand and grass and 10% on mud.

I visited ARB accessories store and they told me I should look first for a good suspension. The factory on is steel suspension with ground clearance of 210mm and top model comes with optional air suspension raising the vehicle upto 270mm and lowring for sporty drive in highways.

I am not sure if I should go for 4wd specialized suspension or jeeps quadra lift air suspension. Ah! another important is I have to pick up a recovery gear kit.

Thanks for the guide. Wow! your calender is full of events of different grade and is the most active I found in NSW. I cannot find any club meeting to visit and sign up. I just created my online account on it.

Thanks for your quick response. I will send Jason an email and see you on the next club meeting. Meanwhile, I need to get some accessories fitted. The jeep doesn't come with front recovery hooks, need to fit those, get a recovery kit, bike rear rack and start with grade 1 trip and ahead!

Hi Sandeep,

Welcome to the Jeep Community. Congratulations on your excellent choice.

If you haven't already found it, you need to check out a forum called AusJeepOffroad. That has lots of Jeep specific info.

Whilst you certainly could join any club, I would strongly suggest that you go along to a meeting for your local Jeep club (and in Sydney that means the SydneyJeepClub). The Jeep guys will help you out with where to source stuff, which stuff is best, and recommendations on what to do first for your circumstances. You'll find the people with the same sort of vehicle generally know a bit more about what they need as priority and what can wait. It can be hard to find stuff for newer Jeeps as well, so you need that inside knowledge.

Some of my friends recently moved to Sydney and joined that club - don't know if they have been out with them yet. I have met some of the folk and they seem nice.

Check out a magazine called Jeep Action. A subscription to the magazine is a requirement before you can go to Camp Coffs - the Jeep event at Coffs Harbour over Easter. When we went last year the Cherokee was stock and had never been in low range. That changed quickly :-)

Also, Sydney Jeepers are hosting Jeep Jamboree next year, and you will want to look into that.

Your Jeep will be more capable than you think, even without mods. The main thing you need is to go out with some folk who can help you learn how to drive it. I haven't got a snorkel, and it hasn't stopped us yet.

It's a Jeep thing....you wouldn't understand.

Not looking for high thrilled action 4wd. As the car is new so as the engine, design and parts there are mods still unavailable which is required to make the car perfect for grade 4+ trips.
