Terrano 2.7TDi 5 door $9,990
'91 paj TDi 7 Seater $11,000

seen some 60 and 80 series cruisers but I really don't want something that big.

a lot of people will tell you that there are problems with Discos - mostly people who have never owned one. It's true that Discos have some niggling faults but it is rare that they stop your from proceeding (apart from maybe the newer Discos that run EC motors and lots of other electronic stuff (particularly airbag suspension) that will no doubt fail at some inopportune moment...as with lots of current 4WDs). It is very unusual for them to blow a motor (as with some model 3.0TD Patrols) or a front diff (as with some Cruisers) or any other catastrophic failure. Most of the niggling faults will have been sorted in a 1994 car. The Disco will eat the others off road and gets great fuel economy.

However, if your main interests are around town, the Terrano is a nice compact fourby with a good motor. The Paj would be running a 2.5TD which is nowhere near as good as the later 2.8TD. Other than that, a good tourer. I presume the Jack is the older box shape...

Mick,

What has been said above is all pretty well on the money. The Disco would be my pick from your list as the people I know who have them all love them.

I drive a Patrol for a lot of reasons basically though I need the size. If I did not have to lug the missus and three kids around I would have a Disco.

In standard trim they are a reasonably comfortable and very capable tourer. All the regular dress up bits are available from your local accessory shop and with diff locks etc. they become nearly unbeatable.

The first Disco that I got a close look at was owned by a mate who was a sales rep in Sydney and that was where it did most of its work.gatting about 10 - 8l/100k. Onthe open road it was even better.

On a Cape York trip it kept up with my double dif locked Patrol.

Oh he still has it about 300,000k on.

Hey Mick - if you search for Terrano in this site you will find a lot of info - we had a Japanese import Terrano 2.7 diesel turbo for about 4 years - never missed a beat - only normal things - battery, alternator etc - it was 1992 done 60,000 when we got it - economy is fantastic - as long as you keep your motor maintained - not the fastest on the block - but staying power you can';t beat - we have taken it heaps of places - Fraser Island, Palm Valley, Ooodnadatta Track etc etc - did 9300k on a trip to Darwin and beyond last year - cost us just over $1000 in fuel - towing our Dingo camper trailer, loaded car, and sitting on 100k on average mostly. We use a fuel additive called Flashlube - available from Don Kyatt here in Melbourne - keeps injectors clean - my mechanic reckons truthfully that this is why we get such good economy.
This is my recommendation - for what it's worth - we liked it so much we have just updated to a Spanish Terrano II 2.7TDI - which so far is as good as the last one.

thanks for your imput,
forgot to mention, the disco, has a snokel, bull bar tow pack and was a one owner, who was very fussy... if he spent $5 on brake fluid the rcpt is in the owners manual.......

It was my first choice but not too sure if that price is on the money, or too good to be true, it's done mid to high 200'000 k's but it's clean and start, not a power house but still stronger than my KE70 corolla, and still reg as a 4 cyl in SA...... cheap as.

yep...that service history and price are about right Mik...that's two of the biggest advantages of a second-hand Disco: they're usually bought new by relatively conservative older gents who maintain them meticulously; and they have a low-resale value due to perceptions of unreliability (which, as I said before are usually just niggling faults which are well sorted by the time you buy it second hand...)
