Innamincka to Birdsville

Hi all
If this has been done to death just point me at the thread, but... Is Innamincka to Birdsville "doable" in 1 day. We are a Rodeo twin cab and Tvan setup. I wouldn't mind going via Haddon corner but that makes the trip quite a bit longer than via Cordillo Downs. Also .. has anyone been through these roads recently = what are they like. If it's not a 1 day trip can anyone suggest any decent spots to stop for the night on either of the roads. Any information wouold be greatly appreciated.
cheers
Kevin

Yes, with good road conditions.

Hi Kevin,

I have driven from Birdsville to Innamincka in one day no problems.
But that was via the Walkers Crossing track which is not currently open.

I remember Member Ruth once posting that she did not recommend attempting the drive via Cordillo Downs (the next shortest route) in one day, especially if you have young children.
It may be "doable", but why stress yourself out for the sake of an overnight stop along the way.
I have not travelled via Cordillo Downs, but remember from other discussions that there are several places along the route suitable for an overnight stop.

Kevin, It certainly would be doable in a long day towing a Tvan but as Sandman says there are a few pleasant places to camp on the way. One is near the Arrabury turn off on Montkeleary Ck at the "southern" end and Moonda Lake (if it's full) at the "northern" end. Bit flogged out at Cadelga ruin but interesting just the same.

G'day Justin
Is Montkeleary Ck just before the Arrabury turnoff coming from the South?
cheers

This time last year it was an easy drive, with us arriving in Birdsville mid afternoon with still enough time to "visit" and cross Big Red before dinner. We did not go the Cordillo Downs way.

Hi Kevin,

I've only done it in a day going through the Cordillo Downs Road. Check this link for Cordillo Downs Road. It's gives good info and shows a good campsite along the way. If you've got a T Van you might as well use it.

You could go through Haddons Corner and make it in a day but it might be a bit of a rush. There are a few good spots to camp along that way too.

Have a good trip,
Steve

We did it several years ago in one day which included a decent lunch stop and a poke around cordillo downs. We left Innamincka about 10 and arrived BV about 6.

If you are intending to leave in the near future the road from Birdsville via Cordillo Downs is currently closed according to the Sa road conditions web site.

OK thanks for all that everybody - looks like it's a good idea to take my time - so back to the second part of the question ... Between Innamincka and Arrabury (on either of the two roads) can anybody recommend a camping sport or 2 for the night.
cheers

You can camp at the Dig Tree, but that's not very far from Inna. We didn't notice many other possibilities when we did that road last week but we weren't really looking.

We did Inna to Birdsville in 7 hours; Forester and camper trailer. Roads were good.

As I mentioned in my previous reply Montkeleary Ck crossing on the Cordillo Rd would be the pick.

Sorry Justin
sitting here at work - haven't checked the replies properly. That sounds great. When I get home I'll start checking maps for that one.
thanks again

Thank you all.

I am also planning a trip through there, and was wondering the same thing - should I plan a stop and if so where.

So I've got my answers without needing to ask.

Cheers, guys.
