Hi,

I am looking at doing a round trip of central QLD from Caloundra in August. Following is the basic planning agenda as it stands at the moment.

Day 1 Caloundra – Dalby
DAY 2 DalbyRoma
Day 3 RomaCharleville
Day 4 CharlevilleLongreach
Day 5 Longreach
Day 6 Longreach Winton – Day Trip
Day 7 Longreach
Day 8 LongreachBlackall
Day 9 LongreachEmerald
Day 10 Emerald – Biloela
Day 11 Biloela – Gayndah
Day 12 Gayndah – Caloundra

I will be searching all the tourist information and doing all of the normal tourist things (e.g. Qantas, Stockmans Hall of Fame). However I would like to draw on your experience.

What are the must see sights that you have visited in these towns etc.

Regards,
David.

Roma - Have a look at Big Rig on the eastern side of town.

Charleville - Cosmo centre (need to book)

Tambo - check out Tambo Teddy's open from 9 - 5 mon - Fri and 9 - 12 on Saturdays

Blackall - heaps of shearing history,

Barcaldine - Tree of Knowledge

Longreach - ASHF, and Quantas Museum (both very $$)

Winton - Lark Quarry, Age of the Dinosuar etc,

Cheers Kev

While in Winton there is the Waltzing Matilda Centre, particularly the Rural Machinery etc out the back, then there is Arno's Wall and don't forget to visit Paul at the Tattersals Hotel.

Just out of Longreach the little town of Ilfracombe is worth stopping at to see the restored vehicles along the road, a couple of hours can be easily spent wandering along just having a good look at all of these

David,

There's more to the central west than Longreach, but am biased as live in Winton. You won't "do" Winton in a day trip, there's too much to see.

Australian Age of Dinosaurs;
Waltzing Matilda Centre & Qantilda Museum;
Truck & Machinery Museum;
Lark Quarry Dinosaur trackways(a day trip from Longreach alone);
a meal @ Tatt's pub, dining out;
Winton Hotel, and dine outside, recommend "Chicken Outback"
Corfield & Fitzmaurice display;
Searle's Outback Store, for friendly service, and a step back in time.

Bob.
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

Hi David, we've just spent 2 nights in Longreach & Winton in the last week. Lots to see in Longreach - Qantas Museum & Aust Stockmans Hall of Fame both worth doing. The Luke Thomas show at 11am at ASHF was well worth the extra $$. Did a coach ride - very overpriced, don't bother.Lark Quarry was great, need 5 hours. Other things to see in Winton, we had 2 nights but only 1 full day, could have spent more time there. Night time tour at Cosmos Centre in Charleville was great - need to book in advance & very cold. Cheers Rachael

Just a thought, we just did Chinchilla to Windorah with Sir Kev then they headed up the Diamontina we went mustering with family out west further. On our way back we spent two nights in Quilpie. What an unreal little place. The caravan park has entertainment and camp oven meals. Information centre has a great Museum. We spent two nights in Charleville (Bailey Bar C/p must book camp oven meals. Cosmos centre a must. Im into Australian history. There is plenty out there. Remember if you want a caravan park from Chinchilla to Charleville booking ahead is a must. If your into free camp the left hand side of the bridge at Miles, the lake just before Quilpie and the Cooper crossing Windorah.

If you do get to Winton try to have a look at "The Bladensberg Nat. Park".
Any reasonable vehicle will traverse the area.
No good in the wet.

Have fun Haji-Baba.
