Every trip planner I've tried has sent me around Surat/
Roma which, on paper, adds nearly an hour - whereas the obvious choice seems to be direct to
Morven from
St George. Now, I haven't been along that road for about 5 or 6 years and I must say, I've never seen a road so littered with Roo carcasses but surely it would be the better run???
Advice appreciated.

Gooday something different would be to head from
St George to
Bollon (good
camp on the Wallum) about 49 klms west of
Bollon turn right to
Charleville and then onto
Augathella. The dirt to
Charleville has alwas been quite good.

Hi Steve
RACQ planner gave me
St George to
Mitchell (following river) then to
Morven on the
Warrego Highway - 390 kilometres
St George to
Augathella. Any other roads on the map to
Morven would take a lot of zig-zagging from
Mitchell. No knowledge of road conditions.

sorry MH and others - didn't make the orig post very clear: the planners are sending me through Surat/
Roma and I would think the road direct to
Mitchell and then
Morven better. As I said, last time along there I'd never seen so much roadkill and was literally weaving in and out of it but don't know whether that is normal or I got it on a bad day. Still would've thought it a better run though. Sorry about the confusion.

Steve,
figured as much. Drove through in so called daylight (overcast and bucketing down). Did see a couple of dead roos... but spent my time dodging all the emus.... lol...

that road from
St George to
Mitchell would be the one to take for
Tambo etc though, wouldn't it?? rather than going around Surat/
Roma??

Steve,
I haven't travelled that road yet, but should be okay in daylight, missing out on the suicicdal 'roos.
Only reason the highways seem cleaner is that main roads often do patrols along, and remove the carcasses. Imagine they'd be classed as road
hazard, even after they're dead.
Surat -
Roma is all sealed, and not a bad road, but a lacking in anything interesting.
Bob.

Take the
St George -
Mitchell road
Much quicker than going via
Surat and
Roma.
It will be no different to any other road for road kill.
My father goes that way to get to
Charleville from
St George so must be decent to travel on as he is in a passenger vehicle.
Cheers Kev

yep - as I thought. Must've been an abberation on the planner. The road was perfectly good when I last drove it, 5/6 years back (carcasses apart - which were much worse than the Roma/
Surat Rd when I'd recently driven that) but wondered if something had changed. Not the first time I've been sent the long way around by a navigator or planner.

I don't know what travel programmes you have been using. WhereIs and Google Maps send you up to
Mitchell from
St George.
This is a stret view of the road.

Image Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be FoundI forget the other but one was RACQ and having read MH's post above, thought I'd give it another crack. This time was even worse: it took me through
Condamine and
Miles and directed me left from there.
Hope the image comes out:
It's a bit like these damned gps units. I use em all the time around
Sydney for work and sometimes I know a better route than it does - then sometimes I don't, but think I do. You trust em and they let you down - don't trust em and they make you look a fool.
LOL

It's been raining , my information from North bound Truckies was, it's been drizzle from the border to
Blackall with some heavier showers, also rain back as far as
Longreach, I would be sticking to a sealed road.
