Planning our first camping trip in January and want to head up to the
Mildura area. We have 2 kids (9 and 7 years old) and wanted a pleasant place near the water without the crowds. Any ideas welcome.

Hi. Do you mean with or without facilities. We just had 2 weeks at a place called Curlwaa.Curlwaa C/P $20 per night with power and water. It has a
pool and is central to heaps of stuff in the area including Mungo N/P. 5K from
Wentworth and Coomealla that have a large club each, Coomealla has a golf course, and around 25k from
Mildura. It is beside the Murray but not waterfront. On the other side of the river (across Abbotsford
Bridge) there is
free camping but no facilities. Wish we could have stayed longer. Cheers,Bob.

We overnighted at a place called Merbein off the
Wentworth Road, from memory less than 10km North of
Mildura. I would take the middle entrance, notes are Whiting St 130mtrs and Main Rd North 400mtrs on
Wentworth Road. Entrance Lat/Long Sth 34.15891 East 142.06533 about 500m of reasonable dirt track to a
T junction we turned left and overnight at
parking area 9, 10 or 11. By the River.
Great place, Bit of a drop to the river here so turning right at the
T junction could be better river access for children. But area is so good ( could
well be up to 100 campsites via the 3 entrances) but could be full in Jan.
I would take a trip earlier to
check it/or other alternatives out.
Where we stayed there were no facilities, but do recall a
toilet block near the
T junction which may not be true.
Peter

I think this is the old Merbien Common Peter. It's largely controlled access these days unfortunately. We spent many a happy holiday camping down there on the creeks and billabongs as kids.
Cheers Mick

Mick,
We were there in late September along with about 8 other camps in a 3Km length edge of the river.

Another vote for Merbein Common.
Head out from
Mildura along the "river road"(Ranfurly Road>Reilly St), up pump
hill just before the town and turn right into River Ave along side the cricket ground (Chaffey Park).
Head along River Ave and at the end turn left into Whiting St>
Wentworth Rd then take the first dirt road to the right.
It is behind the winery building/yards.
Some good spots along the river (including the local swimming "beach") and there is a
toilet. Cannot comment on the state of the convenience.
Take care not to
camp beneath the large gums and be wary of how strong the Murray can be.
Enjoy.
Merbein is a lovely friendly town with all you need for shopping.
Have fun and slip, slop, slap.
Peter.

If you want to be near
Mildura, the best Caravan Parks on the river are
Apex Park at
Mildura, Buronga Riverside and Gol Gol Caravan Park, all have direct frontage to river for boating, swimming etc for kids. If you want to be out a bit,
Wentworth CP has frontage to
Darling River and is a nice clean park. Merbein Common is good but Psyche Bend is also good with designated Campsites, Firepits and pit
toilets. There are lots of
free camping along the Murray on the Victorian side with no facilities, however very limited on the NSW side as most are private property.
