Hey everyone........
Can anyone offer any info on free campsites and/or caravan parks along the Indian Ocean Drive north of Perth. Which are the best, which to avoid.
Thanks for your advice.

Where abouts in Wilbinga ? As I havent gotten out of the 4x4 and made camp behind the dunes off the beach over many years in about the same place. Mind you I`ve slept in the back of my 4x4 whilst others have slept in sleeping bags/tents, havent seen the little criiters, excpet on the Powerlines which was six or seven years ago, and mainly in the late spring or summer. But thanks for the warning, as I am seriously allergic to tick bite fever.

try the campin Australia or Wikki camps apps for your phone. Both very good and showed a few campsites I had forgotten in this area.

Little Freshwater and Cliff Head has free camping as far as I know and are lovely spots. Both past Leeman.
Sandy Cape, Near Jurien Bay, has free or low cost camping.
Lake Indoon, a few kms east of Leeman is a lovely spot with free or low cost camping. Great area for birds.
Coorow shire council (Green Head & Leeman) are also looking at changing their blanket no camping policy. This will open up a lot of camping spots that are currently being used anyway.

Also quite a few spots you can turn into between Leeman and Dongara such as Knobby Head for a night or two.

Cliff Head is no longer authorised for camping (probably never was - just traditionally used and still may be). I will only give out details of authorised place on the internet.

Lake Indoon at $10.50 per person did not qualify for my category of low cost, being over $20 for two.

These Shires have taken a hard line on camping because of past history. It sounds like good news MKO if any of them re-assess the position, so thanks for what may be the start of some good news.

I think Lake Indoon is one of the loveliest camping spots along this stretch of road.

Spoke to Ranger for Irwin Shire.
Cliff Head is free camping for 72 hours.
Freshwater is no longer a camping area due to campers breaking into fishermans shacks there. Several camping areas between Freshwater and Cliff Head are currently having their access blocked by Main Roads.

Ashley is a pretty decent bloke as long as you don't piss him off and has been the ranger for a long time so heard all the excuses.

I noticed Indian Ocean Drive is festooned with blue "No Camping" signs all the way along (at least in the Irwin Shire). At each set of tracks leading off the main road there seems to be a sign. What interested me is that some show a tent with a cross through it and others show a caravan with a cross through it. I wondered if "No camping" literally meant no camping (i.e. tents and campfires) and didn't apply to parking a caravan for the night (?) Otherwise why different signs? Anyone ever argued the point with a ranger? Just curious.

By the way, there was no "No Camping" sign of any description at Cliff Head and with toilets and mobile bins on site, I suggest parking here is obviously acceptable (as confirmed to MKO).

Hi Paul,

We can recommend Cliff Head (just south of the junction of Indian Ocean Drive and Brand Highway).Free camp site with toilets and bins, just a few hundred metres off Indian Ocean Drive.

Lots of other RVers joined us for the night right on the beach. Tracks lead off north and south along the beach to more secluded camping spots.
