The
Gordon River is one of several that run through the
Franklin-
Gordon Wild Rivers National
Park and is one of Tasmania's wild treasures. It is one of the pristine rivers that carve deep gorges into the
park . It is located at the end of
Gordon River Road, about 100km beyond
Mount Field National Park and a few kilometres past
Strathgordon.
The dam was completed back in 1974 and is the tallest dam (140 metres) in Tasmania. It backs up beside the road as you reach
Strathgordon. Lake Pedder is visible on the southern side of the road. Pedder feeds
water into Lake
Gordon and the Dam impounds both. The generation facilities of the
Gordon Power Station are closed to the public.
The massive the concrete wall features an arch both horizontally and vertically. The top is higher than
Sydney Harbour Bridge. When full, the waters behind the
Gordon Dam hold 31 times the volume of
Sydney Harbour.
