Gunbalanya - NT

Gunbalanya is a remote Aboriginal community in western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, located about 60 km east of Jabiru near the East Alligator River. The settlement was historically known as Oenpelli, a name used during the mission period, but the traditional name Gunbalanya is now the official name of the community.The area lies within Aboriginal land and is surrounded by the rugged sandstone country of Arnhem Land. Access to the community requires a Northern Land Council permit, and visitors must follow local access conditions.Gunbalanya is well known for its strong cultural heritage and nearby rock art sites, particularly around Injalak Hill, which contains extensive galleries of traditional Aboriginal rock art. The community is also home to the respected Injalak Arts Centre, where local artists produce prints, bark paintings, weaving, and other traditional artworks.Facilities in Gunbalanya include a community store, fuel, health clinic, school, police station, and art centre. Visitor services are limited and travellers should be self-sufficient and respectful of local community protocols.Gunbalanya is reached via the Arnhem Highway through Kakadu National Park, then north across the East Alligator River crossing near Cahills Crossing and along the Oenpelli Road. Road conditions vary and can become impassable in the wet season.The surrounding region features spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment scenery, floodplains, and significant cultural sites, making it an important location both historically and culturally within northern Australia.
