Road conditions Gary hwy and Talawana Track

A couple of times (including towing a boat), but not recently.
Mostly it was a great drive with only a few corrugations around the communities. The worst area was the southern end of the RRNP which was very bad corros at the time.
Don't miss Carawine Gorge and the Scull Springs Road.
Fuel was usually cheaper at Nullagine than Marble Bar.

It's a great trip, though like Peter I haven't done it this year. Agree that Currawine Gorge is not be to missed (we camped there for nearly a week), and Skull Springs road into Nullagine is well worth it too.

Did these tracks a few days ago and they are not for the faint hearted. Too hard to describe in the required detail in writing. I am happy to speak to you about the conditions of these tracks just give me a ring on 0419846292. You can follow my trip by looking for Idler Chris on member tracking. Note, the track did not track on the 14th for some reason when I went north on the Gary Hwy to Gary Junction and then turned right to Jupiter Well. From my tracking you can see that I am now in QLD and out of range at times. Just keep trying and you will eventually get me. Cheers, Chris

It’s 4 years since we did some of those tracks you mentioned. Didn’t do the Talawana,. There’s some good camps about a km north of Windy Corner, on eastern side of Gary H’way, maybe 500M off the track.

Gary H’way was just a track in some stretches & good in others. We drove up the top at Charlie’s Knob, saw Lake Cohen 3 parts full & camped 1 night at McPhersons Pillar. Worth a look even if you don’t camp there.

One of worst tracks was on way to Veevers Crater, with lots of dead wattle hanging over the edge of the road. Top end of Gary H’way was a bit corrugated as I remember?

We went into Rudall NP from Telfer Mine(had to sign in & were escorted through the site to Rudall access). Camped a few kms south where country opened up a bit, still had phone service but the noise of the mine was a constant drone in the distance. Road on from there was very corrugated until Desert Queen Baths turnoff, then it was quite rocky & slow going. We exited the NP past Hanging Rock & out through Balfour Downs onto Skull Springs Road.

Telfer road wasn’t too bad, patches of corrugations & few rough bits. Worth going into Running Waters for a look & a swim, beautiful, clear warm water. Not the best place to camp I’d suggest. Carrawine Gorge is a magic spot too.

We wanted to take that route in 2018, but were uncertain whether the Canning at the western end of the east Talawana was still flooded. (It was as it happened). We fuelled up with enough to return to the GJR if we couldn't get through, but only went a few few kms down the Gary hwy before deciding it was a mistake. The track was at first tight & scratchy & then spinifex, but the spinifex had recently burned & was still smouldering. Ahead of us in the distance was a huge plume of black smoke. We feared the wind getting up & lighting up the uburned spinifex around us, so chickened out & returned to the GJR & instead drove to Punmu & then turned south through the Telfer mine & on to Karlamilyi (Rudall River) NP & out to Newman. We returned to Marble Bar, Carawine Gorge & Skull Springs Rd after Mt Augustus & the Kennedy Ranges. Running Waters & Skull Springs are not to be missed!
