Hi People,
We are planning on doing the Kimberleys next year. Seems like we will have to do it starting out on the last week of April, getting to
Broome via Tanami first week in May. I know it could be a bit early but thems the dates. Anyone done it during this period and had problems with weather?? No matter what i will still enjoy the 6 weeks away :-)

Glenn,
Yes and No.
Planned that route a couple of years ago.
The Tanami Track was closed due to weather restrictions so we had to go via the bitumen. Just pot luck I guess.
That particular year, the "wet season" was still happening in May.
Like you said, "no matter what, I will still enjoy". Thats the only attitude one should have when traveling. Always be prepared to change one's plans depending on current conditions and restrictions.
Have a good trip Mate. I'm still waiting for the opportunity for a
Kimberley's Trip.

We left the Sunshine Coast on 18th May this year and got as far as
Boulia and then heavy rain closed the Plenty Hwy and Tanami Tracks so had to detour via bitumen and Mt Isa and across. The roads were open but the heavy rain in the centre for several days closed all the un-made roads for a while.
The upside was that when we did get to the Kimberleys, there was lots of
water flowing over waterfalls and we had a great time. Everything is so much nicer when there is
water and greenery everywhere.

We did the Kimberleys in 2002 , left
Perth last week in April back 1st week in June and had great weather. Only rain we got was leaving and returning to
Perth,(the charriot and CT needed washing anyway) day time temps up in the Kimberleys were 28 - 34, evenings very mild.
At no time were we restricted in where we wanted to go , all roads were open etc etc and there was enough
water around to make it interesting , the waterfalls were falling and so on with the occasional
water crossing.
A benefit of going early is you miss the crowds, we arrived in
Broome the 24th April and had no problems booking accomodation, came back a month later on our way home and there were queues of tourists waiting to get into caravan parks so my advice is book early and ahead.
In summary you can't do much about the weather , just have to be flexible and work around it - ENJOY- its a great part of this land.

did the kimberlys probably about 2 week later than that in 03 grr in fantastic condition. Might be a bit early for some spots as
bell gorge area was still closed and mitchel falls had just opened (
Derby info centre had it marked as closed but it was open by the time I got there) also 02-03 had a weak wet season so I would say you may have to be prepared on missing out on a few areas depending on the season

Glenn,
The wife and I are going to depart
Port Pirie early April to make for
Darwin,
Litchfield,
Kakadu, etc.
It will then be on to
Kununurra by end April to commence the Bungle Bungles, GRR,
Kimberley,
Mitchell Plateau,
Pilbara, Gascoyne, etc.
We intend to reach
Perth around mid June before making our way back home by end of June.
I believe that there will still be plenty of
water in the waterfalls around then, but not enough to dampen the driving. I will be checking with the locals first though.
Who knows, we may see you somewhere with a bit of luck.
Geoff.
