I am lookig at getting a
UHF Radio for travelling around WA and am after some recommendations. The unit is to go in a RA Rodeo Diesel Dual Cab and I was looking at mounting the aerial on the rear bar.
I have looked at the GME 3200, 340O, however I was a bit concerned that the internal speaker would be a problem. Is this an issue and if so what front speaker models should I be looking at.

I have a Uniden UH-089 no completes.
Why is it that Uniden seem to get a bad rap and everybody loves the GME unit’s, I have used both and yes the GME is a bit easier to operate and seam’s to get a smidgen more range (Most likely due to the bigger aerial that was mounted).
So why is GME so much better, I am happy with my uniden it has done everything I needed of it.

It Isn't necessarily better. It is the same old Toyota v Nissan thing.
Recent tests identified a 1-2 Km advantage of a GME unit over a Uniden one at extreme range of 18-20 Kms.
What the
test did not identify was whether an identical aerial was used for the
test and whether the aerial was located in the same place on the
test vehicles. Probably not.
Each brand and model of the GME or Uniden units have their own specific features to tempt the buying public and IMHO the final choice would be better based on VALUE for money at the time of purchase.
Then there is the Icom product to throw into the debate.
Most independent distributors (e.g. Prestige Communications) stock and sell all major brands, so there must be a similar market level for them.
If one were to be "true blue" then maybe the GME Electrophone has an advantage of being locally (Aussie) made. That's about it.

Ive got the front mounted speaker GME 4440 and love it. Mounted it in the second DIN slot below the CD player.
Four of my mates have the 4400's and no faults, no complaints.
Not sure of Uniden's credability, but the GME is Aussie designed and manufactured which counts for a heck of a lot in my books. And if you send them an email enquiry - even about trivial questions they respond the same day. Thats something many companies fail on.
And dont worry about the volume, the GME can belt out a conversation as loud as the CD player does over the basic Hilux speakers!
Choice is yours at the end of the day though:)
Cheers,
Glenn.

THe best thing about the GME4400 for me is that it has 20 user programmable receive only channels which can be tuned to the police channels that are still using uhf.
This was only available on units after a certain serial number, details were on the site. there are still plenty of police channels around
sydney, blue mountains and up the coast. and they recur in different areas. if i remember correctly the frequency used around the sutherland shire is the same as the one used at kirra beach on the QLD border.
I have the GME uhf and a Uniden ssb am mounted in an overhead centre console, both perform
well.
Of course as digital comes into use this will be a less useful feature.

Thanks Guys,
Your input has been invaluable, not sure about the brand rivalry though !!!
I have to agree with the buy Aussie philosophy and will go for the GME 4400. I have a feeling the 2 brands will be comparable in performance and reliability , but I like to see the money stay in oz.
One final question, any advise on aerials ???
Regards
Bruce

Ok, what ever you do make sure you put the arial as high as possible. If you have a roof rack put it on there. I have a small rubber arial on 99% of the time and its very good, but i also carry a 6db arial to put on when height is not an issue.

millar, have had Uniden about the
farm and the remaining ones aren't reliable. I have one or two remaining Phillips but am pleased indeed with the GME, and most recently have a TX4400 added. I love the features that go beyond the 3200 and 3400.
I am aware that some have two sets - one for scanning and the other for transmitting. With the 4400 you can scan and transmit immediatly on the channel to respond and the priority channel has priority in scanning too, not just easy to get back to. I realise that some like a reserve set though. You can download a copy of the manual and read it to understand the useage if you want from Prestige Communications GME page in PDF format.

I run TX 4400's and TX 3800's (commercial) in my vehicles and find that I needed an external speaker for the 3800's. I have aimed this up at the driver for ease of hearing. This radio is the commercial model of the 3200 and 3400 and would be the same audio system.
Get the one that you want and just add a $20.00 external speaker and put it anywhere that you like. You can get really small ones (like Trucksters) or really big ones (like Member Bob).
The TX 4400 is a neat radio and in my opinion "idiot proof". It just does not have the commercial frequency program capacity. Great audio.

had a Uniden threw it in the bin, it was bleep
went with the 3400, then updated to the 3800
my 3400/3800 are in roof console, with a hole cut below the speaker so I can hear it, but external would be good if it didnt suck so much to get console down
