We are planning on visiting Tassie in March 06- in conjunction with the National 4WD Gathering. This will be held March 21 to 25, 20km out of Hobart on the Derwent.
As we will probably be in Tassie for about 14 days in total- could we have some suggestions of things NOT to be missed, others that should be avoided. Also, any good 4wd trips (maybe a mini Canning???).
This will be our first trip to the l'il island so we've fitted a loooooong snorkel for the trip over from the big island.
Thanks in advance

Try this book - it's a beauty. And available from the Exploroz Shop.
I went to Tassie earlier this year and did not get the book until half way through the trip. Now I have to go back to see what I missed. Great place, terrific sights, amazing food.

4WD tracks in Tasmania: Off road Tasmania $35.95
1st Edition Author Boden, Chris
Over 55 roads and tracks are described in this book together with maps showing all the detail required to navigate to and along the routes.
This book not only gives you concise directions and information on access, campsites and facilities, but also provides fascinating snippets of information about the areas you visit.

We too are hoping to go to Tasmania early next year, so always welcome everyone's "mustn't miss" ideas. We'll take the caravan, which will have its limitations.

Hmmm,

Been over to Tassie 3 times now and don't believe there is anything that should be avoided, except MY trout fishing lake and the little bay where you can harvest oysters from the shoreline:-)

Great State, plenty to see, plenty to do.

The only way you can miss the good stuff in Tassie is to close your flipping eys as you travel.

Central, east coast, north and south, wilderness and plains all bueatiful and in 4 1/2 weeks we hardly saw much at all, saving the Wilderness for next time.

To me the highlite was a 3 day rest stop at Bridport with the van virtually on the beach, watching the sunset with a bottle of scotch evaporating in the glow of the sun on the rusting rocks and gently waves.

AAAh!! Tassie, only 2754 days till retirement.

The tradgedy is your time is too short !! . Chris book has alot of through tracks that are ok for a single vehicle . If you want a 4wd drive holiday then the west coast has a lot to offer Quite safe beach run from strahan at the heads to the viewing platform low tide best trip up the gordon good on a nice day Train trip to queenstown good as well do not go to the henty dunes alone along the beach as the exit can be perilous- quicksand - as you need to get between a creek and the dunes to get off the beach.

Mt Mccall is a nice trip as well and fairly easy 2 vehicles would be better All these need good weather for the views

East coast has coles bay and wineglass bay and the hazards good campspots as well Very scenic

forestry roads behind scamander offer good views and interesting driving not too hard .

If you travelled to hobart via the east coast and then returned to the ferry via the west this would give you 2 different views of the state

how long is a piece of string ?

If you like trout fishing, crispy mornings and more forest scenery than even a QLD farmer could knock down, then give yourself at least a few months.

The East coast from Freycinet right up to Ansons bay is worth at least a week. the hinterland behind - St Marys, Elephants pass etc are scenic - great views.

The NE is full of woodchips, but theres some lovely places like Ansons Bay and Tomahawk. These places are all quaint 'shack towns' and most have littel or no services - remember your in Tassie now, not Raymond Terrace.
Much of the the centre is just like NZ.

The West and Southwest is the real gem for those keen on getting away. I personally havent spent a huge amount of time there, saving it for next time. Folks I know say West Coast is the only place to be in Tassie !

Must sees':
Richmond - cause everyone does.
Penguins out of Launceston (Beauty Pt?)
Cataract gorge
Cascade brewery
Strahan and Gordon River - and convict tour of Sara Island !!
Walk!! around Dove Lake
Trout fishing - nearly bloody anywhere !
Freycinet (but dont pay $20/night to camp !!)
Hobart - Salamanca, the wharves,
The Botanic Gardens !!!
....and all the National parks...Mt Field comes to mind.

Fresh produce - IMHO worlds best food in Tassie - ENJOY !!

more than enough.

cheers
Rich

Good list Rich and I would add Port Aurthur - sad history both early and recent but fascinating.

The Hike to the tip of cradle mountain.... if you like hiking that is... 10hrs return slog...if you're fit.

Ring River and Montezuma falls tk. both to Montezuma Falls is spectacular and a hike in or 4wd only. The ring river tk is much more rarely used, and is just awesome, with some big bogoles, and the river itself.

Also Climeys Tk from Granville - Trial Harbour.... just amazing along the coast.

2 cars reccommended, but we did it alone no probs.

signman,
We are going to Tassie for the same gathering and have organised to go on the 4 dy tagalongs with the Braddon club, this should be good as the locals are giving you 4 days of off road. Check out the web site for the trips prior to the gathering

Probably see you there. White GU 4.2 Nissan, NSW plates

I went to Tassie as a backpacker 15 years ago and missed so much I am determined I will return. As mentioned above, the whole place is good, the rivalry between north and south is quite funny. The town of Strachan and the cruise up the river is good, just don't let them tell you the ferry was built in Fremantle specifically for THEM.

We used it here on the Rottnest run for 2 years before it was sold, along with it's two sister ships, one of which went on to Sydney harbour, the other went overseas.

Queenstown (on the way to Strachan) is the wierdest place I ever stopped for a beer. Legend has it that this is where the story originated that became the movie DELIVERANCE.

Hi Signman,

I lived in the North West Coast of Tassie for 4 years, and during that time must have explored every nook and cranny there is!!!! It is a beautiful island and as most previous members have stated there is just so much to see.

March is a great time of the year to travel through Tassie. The island is really made up of two halves (the locals will tell you that is North and South but it is really East and West). The East coast has some beautiful coastal towns and beaches with an old English charm about them. Places like St Helens, Scamander, Bicheno and Swansea are all worthy of a visit. The West coast on the other hand is a much more rugged and natural environment. Although a 4WD is more convenient, you can access most of the areas with a conventional 2WD. I once did a trip from Burnie to Smithton, Montagu, Marrawah, Arthur River, down to Corinna, Zeehan and Strahan in the company falcon.

Some places not to be missed is a visit to Strahan and a cruise through MacQuarie Harbour. Try and take at least a half day cruise with a stop over at Sara Island. Of course no trip to Tassie is complete without a visit to Cradle Mountain. It will probably be rainy and drizzly (it is more times than it is not!!!) but worth the visit. A walk around Dove Lake takes about an hour and a bit and well worth the effort. While you are in the area try and get to the "Big Tree" which is near the Dip Falls The Big Tree

Other worthy places are Cataract Gorge, the murials and country charm at Sheffield, Wine Glass Bay at Freycinet National Park, and just so you can say you have been to the Souther most point of Australia, Cockle Creek is worth a visit.

These are only a few of the must sees but if you want more info drop me a reply.

Enjoy that holiday and best wishes.
