Hi Guys, looking at going with a group of about 5 4bys to the Flinders in March 06.
They all have families and some as young as 2 months (not born yet obviously). We are looking at doing some tracks there in the 3 days we have been allocated. We will be looking at a place to stay that has facilities e.g. toilets, showers maybe cooking area etc. Don't mind camping as long as we have somewhere to shower/clean the kids and wifes!!
Any suggestions?? we would rather stay away from Wilpena resort if possible :-).

Cheers

I was there in September with 3 children, 9,7 & 4. We stayed at Blinman in the rooms across the raod from the pub and commuted back and forth. did a lot of tracks each day and squeezed in the giant walk to the peak one day.
Most definitely will go back again.
The gorges are spectacular.
We went further as well and stayed at Arkaroola
did the back camp track or something called like that and scared the daylights out of the family but had a lot of fun. Arkaroola resort is definitely boring for kids and they told us so (not cheap either)

Have a good trip.

Argadells is a new place open to the public. Only 28km's out the back of Quorn. Great spot.

Argadells ahs been around for a while - just changed hands a year or two ago. Yep, great spot, but doesn't have the facilities apart from two long drops.

There is a cheap camping area at Peterborough that is in the southern flinders. Can't remember the contact details or the address but a bloke on here who likes donuts and topdeck chocolate might be able to provide more info.

I agree with Malcolm P - Blinman is a great place to base yourself. Just be aware though there is a long weekend from 11-13th March and the annual Land Rover Jamboree is being held at Blinman then. You will struggle to get accommodation near there at this time.
If you have LR's come and join us!
Our club stays at the Alapana station, about 5kms south of Blinman. They have good shearer's quarters and facilities for caravans, tents, camper trailers.

The Southern Flinders area is more in the Melrose, Wilmington, Quorn area.
All of these have good Caravan Parks.

If you actually mean the Flinders proper, then Hawker would be the nearest main town.

Rawnsley Park is a very good privately owned station just south of Wilpena Pound.

You say you wish to stay away from Wilpena Resort if possible....Why???
The camping ground there is excellent, if you are relatively new to camping and have lots of young 'uns to cater for.

Can also personally recommend Willow Springs Camping which have shower blocks close to the Manager's Homestead, although the facilities are more Bush Camping. This is the home of Skytrek, which of course should be one of the "tracks" you are planning to do.

Several of us have been to Wilpena before and was not real fond of it, and being a long weekend will more than likely be packed out with other inconsiderate campers.
I have been to skytrek and camped at Willow Springs myself before. Loved it by the way, but that was without the family!
Yeas closer to Hawker would be better, sorry for the confusion there. Don't want to go as low as Wilmington, Quorn etc.

For what you want, Bendleby Ranges near Oororoo has excellent tracks, excellent facilities - even rainwater showers, and you have the choice of accommodation or secluded camp areas. Its the best run place in the Southern Flinders that I've been to, and I've been to most. For 3 days, it would be perfect.

Having been to Bendleby a few times, I concur.

However, there is another location worthy of consideration. About 25-30 km east of Hawker is Worumba Station.

Excellent quarters & facilities, open outside fire spot, BBQ facilities. Can camp as well. They have their own track - a mild run, but with speccy views.

try Worumba for another Flinders perspective - one certainly less well known by the dreaded 'terrorists'.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the insider info :-)) Have to check it out next year.

Theres certainly plenty of great places up there. I think its great that the farmers can make some pocket money out of tourism. It gives us great access to a lot of properties that we wouldn't otherwise see, and the great hospitality.

Cheers

You might like to look at Spear Creek Caravan & Camping Park which is situated on a 16,000 acre sheep & cattle station. It is just 20 klms south of Pt Augusta with many bush walking & 4x4 tracks. With both powered & unpowered sites and good amenities and also camp kitchen with eat-in facilities if needed. Also good laundry facilities (for the babies.)

Very friendly people and sit around the campfire at night and relax.
Hope this helps you as we were there in May this year and loved it.
Regards, Kiasen

If you pass through Melrose if you are coming in from the South, as you roll in to town there will be a road off to your left, with one of those brown with white lettering tourist signs, I can't remember what it says but its the only one pointing to the left at this point. If you take this road it will take you out of town, keep following the dirt road until youget to a T-junction. Turn right at the T-Junction (the main road goes left) About two kays down this road just before you go up someones driveway there will be a gate on your right. Go through that and follow the trail right up over the hills through a few gates and down the other side, providing spectacular views of Flinders Ranges and Spencers Gulf, one of those local secrets (oops not any more). Also Aligator gorge is very spectacular, especially just after it's rained, good facilities (toilets are longdrop, but okay) I don't think camping is aloud, but the cabins in the Melrose caravan park are a good place to base yourselves if you are exploring the Southern Flinders.

I go to the Flinders quite a bit, and was at Rawnsly Park last week. Great place, many cabins if you are interested, or camping. The woolshed has good meals too if you want a night out. Arkapena is a great 4WD track just opposite Rawnsley Park too.
No association with the park, just an enjoyable experience.

Mount Little Station, western side about 11 kays north of Hawker on the Leigh Creek road. Hot showers, splash toilets and great views. Nice lady runs the place (she invited us in for morning tea last time we stayed).

Mambray Creek 15 mins south of Port Augusta is nice too. If you have a group, book one of the two "school camps" which are a little away from the scrum and you set up on wood chips instead of gravel. There are hot showers there now too.

Enjoy

Pete
