We are planning a 10 day trip through the NSW Outback in mid August.
Because of time constraints, we will probably target an area bounded by
Broken Hill,
Tibooburra &
Bourke, but that is not set in concrete at this stage.
We would welcome any suggestions for out of the way
places that we would probably miss, not too keen on spending too much time on the bitumen.
It was suggested that following the Darling from
Bourke to Menindie is a good trip.
Look forward to your suggestions.

We've been to that area a few times.
Mutawintji National Park is great. Also
White Cliffs is interesting (get Jock to take you on a guided tour of his home and around the town).
We're just back from a week in the area. We stayed at
Tolarno Station which is about 50km south of
Menindee. It is a working sheep & goat station. They are fixing up the shearers' quarters at the moment and you can also stay in the
homestead (all meals included). We camped along the river. They have 36km of
Darling River frontage with unlimited firewood. It costs $10/night and you can use showers &
toilets at the shearers' quarters. Basically you can drive &
camp anywhere you like on the property. The managers are nice and the kids were able to play with the baby animals (including an alpacca, kangaroo & lambs).
From
Tolarno we did day trips to
Mungo National Park and
Menindee Lakes. They have a web page tolarnostation.com.au

Tolarno seems to have gone up to $15 a night.

Last week it was still $8.00 plus $2.00 if you wanted to use showers (per car)

Mt Wood section of Sturt NP at
Tibooburra is worth a look. Good historical collection of sheep station equipment and methods if you're into that sort of thing
Also there is a loop track from Mt wood to the northern part of the
park which makes a great 1/2 day trip.
Menindie has never excited me that much but I guess it's a personal thing.
Have a great trip

I have done
Tibooburra &
Cameron Corner a couple of years ago on the way, via the
Bore Track to
Innamincka &
Birdsville.
I was hoping to get some info on out of the way
places that the hordes don't rush to, as they do to Nat Parks.

It is a good trip from
Bourke to Menindie following the Darling. Along the way you can stop for a drink at
Tilpa and
Louth. At Menindie Kinchega NP is worth a visit and if you could a bit further south, Mungo NP is great.
Hungerford on the Qld border is another good spot. It would be an interesting drive from
Tibooburra up to Noccundra then to
Thargomindah down to
Hungerford and then to
Bourke via Ford's Bridge. You can
camp beside the
Noccundra waterhole and pay for a shower at the pub. The road from Thargo to
Hungerford goes through
Currawinya NP which is another spot worth exploring.
You'll have no trouble filling your ten days in at all.

Shaker,
I've just been looking at a few things in that area. Put
Theldarpa Station in google and it brings up a site www.phec.com.au/trip...and it gives some interesting notes and photos on travelling around up there and
camping at the stations. Thought it might interest you.

We were wondering if there is much between the Silver City Highway & the
Dog Fence?
Looks like it would good & relatively remote, we aren't looking to be the essential tourists!

If you're coming from the south I would second Gillian's ideas about Mungo and
Menindee. Muntawintji is an awesome place to visit there's an aboriginal tour and a
good campsite.
If you've already been to
Cameron corner etc, Sturt NP is still a great place to visit.
Don't forget to spend a day or two in
Broken Hill. Its a great place for a rest on your trip and full of interesting attractions.

Shaker,
you said you were interested in the
dog fence,
well, I've read a couple of things that say you can go out to
Silverton to the Mundi Mundi plains then head north and follow the station roads up to Brougham
Gate, Turley's House and Old Quinyambie. From there up to
Hawker Gate and then east to Robbies
Waterhole where you either head north again to Hewart Downs and on to
Tibooburra or keep going east to
Theldarpa and into
Depot Glen and
Milparinka.

Thank you, pretty sure that is the way we will go up, then down to
White Cliffs, up to
Wanaaring, across to
Bourke & then do the
Darling River run down to
Wilcannia & Menindie.
Hope to have a look at
Depot Glen,
Mount Poole,
Theldarpa Station, Trilby Station & anything else of interest on the way.

From my last trip out that way....on the Darling Run
for the touristy stuff...
Jock's
mine tour and the
Solar Power Station tour in
White Cliffs.
Daydream Mine tour out towards
Silverton is amazing
The Living Desert art exhibit at
Broken Hill
The
lookout over the
Mundi Mundi Plain just out past
Silverton is breathtaking......
Trilby Station on the Darling as a formal accomodation for showers and laundry etc
Just be prepared for as little as 2mm of rain to bring the
Darling River Run to a halt. The mud out there is treacherous when even slightly damp......have fun
