I know this is a very general question and difficult to answer but:-

I should be leaving Yulara late September early October and want to end up in SE Qld 2-3 weeks later.

I thought of going back via Oodnadatta track - Birdsville Track etc.

Are there better ways? or is this the best experience.

We will be travelling alone and had no desert experience although some 4WD and outback experience.

Thanks

Paul

Look at Plenty Highway to Bouilia then down to Longreach.Mitchell,Roma,Toowoomba,Brisbane.
The Plenty would be the only dirt bit and can vary from year to year.Been over it twice and different road both times.
Camping at Gem Trees,Tobermoray Station or Bouilia are all good.
Just came back from the Simpson French Line 3 weeks ago. If you are not heavily loaded,it is a nice run accross there depending on traffic.

Hi Paul,
Agree with Trevor above and with that amount of time you could fit in Mt Isa, Combo Waterhole, Winton and Lark Quarry.
Turn left at Tobermorey to Urandangi and then to the Isa. Or, from Boulia, head south to Bedourie, Birdsville then east to Windorah, Jundah, Stonehenge, Lark Quarry and Winton etc OR Windorah, Thargominda, Eromanga, Quilpie and Charleville etc.
Heaps to see whichever way you choose.
Enjoy.

I probably should have mentioned that I will be travelling to Yulara from North Qld and propose to use the Plenty Highway. I was looking for another option to return.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Here is a suggested route: from Yulara go down to Kulgera then across to Old Andado via Finke. From Old Andado go in to Dalhousie Springs then south to the Oodnadatta Track via Hamilton Station. From Oodnadatta go SW to Coober Pedy via the Painted Desert, then back to the Oodnadatta Track via the Coober Pedy to William Creek Road. From William Creek have a look at lake Eyre, then on to Marree. From there you could go up the Birdsville Track, but since you have time a look through the Flinders Ranges, especially the northern part would be worthwhile. Then you could take the Strzelecki Track up from Lyndhurst to Innaminka from where you could go out to Coongie Lakes. from Innamincka you have 3 options - take the Walkers Crossing Track across to the Birdsville Track and then on to Birdsville; go up to Birdsville via Cordillo Downs, or go east and take in the Dig Tree on the Adventure Way. Where you head east of that would depend on time and your ultimate destination.

We have recently driven much of that route and there is a heap of things to do and see. It takes you through a lot of spectacular desert country without getting into the sand dunes as would the French Line.

Enjoy your trip.

Val
