I have a set of Cooper ATR's on my NM Pajero. Supposedly they are guaranteed to last up to 90,000 kilometres. Mine have done nearly 40,000k's and look like they need replacing soon. A mixture of on and off road - Is this out of the ordinary and how much value has the warranty?
Thanks
Phil

I read an article (advertisement) today in Septembers 4x4 australia mag about a guy who got 110,000 out of his and had his first puncture at 109,000. I think he is a tour operator or something. I have never owned a set of coopers but i believe the warranty is a pro rata type deal.

Cooper's " CONCRETE " warranty..

Thats it you drive them off the concrete, at the tyre place and thats it ,,

Don't believe me , ???, then read all the fineprint about their warranty.

I cannot complain about mine, but I know a lot of people wha recon their shyte !

Read post by me above.

Cheers Bucky

One of my AT's cracked from the edge of the lug right in to the steel casing, it had done 15,000 (hard) kilometers. The dealer said "normal wear and tear". I will never go to him or buy Coopers again.

Phil,

"Is this out of the ordinary?"

Of course it is mate, at least that's what the Cooper people will tell you.

"You must have been using them off the blacktop"
"That's not covered under our warranty"

I have read on this forum that the Cooper tyre seems to wear quickly to start with, then the wear rate slows down as the rubber cures with age and use.

Maybe take them to your local tyre centre and get them to measure the remaining tread depth.

Where I'm working we have 5 landcruiser. We use Cooper ATR and before AT. 80% gravel 20% black top. Usually they last 70-80000 Km before replacing them. We use the 265/75R16 LT version.
Are your LT version?

My ATR's have 40,000km on them and look like getting another 40k pretty easy.

LT265/70R17 on a 2004 Prado TD.

Many get far greater KM's than you have but no this is not out of the ordinary & the warrenty depending on your negotiating skills may get you a 30% discount on the next set of Coopers, the same set of tyres you just had a fairly poor run out of. A great warrenty that forces you to buy another set of tyres that you really dont want to buy again.......what a marketing tool that is :-)

Hi Craig
Well said, my exact experience! Coopers are a joke, haggle, haggle, yes sir we can give you 30% of a new set! What the f----! You think i want to wreck another holiday by using Cooper's. No way. The burnt hand teaches the best lesson.

I wouldn't say Cooper are a joke in fact they are very clever particulary with marketing. Flood the media with advertising, build up a reputation by paying high profile 4 wheel drive identities to say they're great, then offer an 80,000+KM warrenty (on certain types) that requires buyers to come in every 10,000KM & pay for wheel balances & alignments that often aren't required. Then if you are one of the minority that really goes offroad & the tyres did happen to fail then they say you abused them, but in good faith offer you another set anyway for 30% off. Doesn't cost them anything but forces you to put another set on that without the warrenty you most likely would have gone to another brand.
Somes tyres like MTR's, sell on word of mouth, others like BFG sell on offroad racing performance, Coopers sell on marketing.
Cheers Craig............

The so called warranty only applies in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane, if you actually ask them. The other capitals are too close to the Outback! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Mileage Warranty is only applicable at participating authorised Cooper agents in capital cities within Australia.
Ask the tyre dealer if they participate in this programme. Most capital city stores do. All country stores do not.

How to maintain the warranty
Every 10,000 kms you need to return to any authorised Cooper dealer to have your tyres balanced aligned and rotated. Participating dealers will endorse the Warranty Card. Every dealer has the right to refuse endorsing your warranty card if a fault is present in your vehicle that is causing erratic or rapid tyre wear.

What it will cost you
Check the Warranty Card as it has a special low price for Cooper customers.

How to Claim on any Shortfall
As long as an authorised Cooper dealer has endorsed your warranty card every 10,000 kms and the original warranty card and invoices for the regular services are forwarded to your Cooper state distributor. The Cooper state distributor will then organize through an authorised Cooper dealer to credit you with any shortfall you may be eligible for based on the warranty conditions off your next purchase.

And unless you have had the required wheel alignments, balances, and wheel rotations to keep the warranty valid your warranty has gone out the window anyway. Check the small print and I think you will find these are the requirements to cover the tyres for the 90 thou klms. I could be wrong but I'm sure that's what I read on one of there brochures a while back unless all thats changed or I read it wrong.Regards Steve M

That's correct Steve , and just figure out how much those regular visits to your tyre dealer would cost to uphold these absurd warranty conditions .

The Cooper warranty is a farce because it is not financially viable to stay within it's terms .

I have had Cooper ATR which lost heaps of the side treads . ARB said they had been told by Cooper that this had now been fixed - so I bought another set . You should see mine after a 15,000 klm WA trip . Plenty of lugs missing and lots of lug damage .

I blew the complete side out of one on a dirt road at 100 klm an hour - exciting . Maybe not the fault of the tyre - who knows .

I bought a new Bridgestone to replace it and I will never use Coopers again .

Willie .

I had a set of Cooper ATR's on my Terracan and went to the "centre" and destroyed one tyre going from Cordillo Downs to Innaminka and destroyed another after getting home and venturing 50M onto a dirt road !!!!!!!!

Talk to any tyre shop ( I did ) from the outback and they all have the same story.............Coopers are crap !!! But they're not complaining as most of their business is repairing Coopers ( or replacing them )

Now at 57000k having done three runs through back blocks NSW to SE Qld and back (live in Adelaide), plus the following - Morgan Mail Run to Yunta, Yunta to Arkaroola, Arkaroola tracks, Strzelecki track, Coongie Lakes, Innimincka to Birdsville via Cordillo Downs, Birdsville Track, Kullimurna water hole and return, Tanami Road, Gibb River Road, part of Kalumbaru Road, MT Elizabeth Station tracks, Neds Creek Road into Willuna. the rest has been sealed highway or city road stuff.
This is since we put them on in June 2004. They should last us to Nov this year as they are near finished now.
I am not complaining that they will not reach the 60000 mark after all that. Biggest trouble was tube failure (pin holes - always right hand side rear). Tyres are checked at least every two hours on bitumen, much more often on the rough stuff.
We run original Toyota split rims and use LT rated Cooper AT tyres. We tow a 3+ tonne off road caravan as well.
Hope this helps.

Phil

Shyte Phil, did you get the LT sidewalls, and what weight is your Pajie ?

I have ATR's on my Navara, and have done 89,000 kms, and that includes 2 loaded up trips through Eastern Central Oz, and never had a puncture ( touch wood ) Still has 10 mm of thread left

They are a great desert tyre, but I have noticed of late that they seem to ride harder, and I keep the air pressure as low as possible, and religiously rotate them every 5000 km

Their warranty is Shyte !,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, our friend, who went with us on the last trip, destroyed 2 sidewalls, and did not stand a chance against Cooper's bull-shyte,,, Answer was simply " what do you expect, you are on the worst roads in the country !"

I would have taken it further, as one tyre did 5000 km, and the other 6,500.

You work it out !

The other thing is monitor your tyre pressures, and dodge the rocks wherever possible

10 mm of tread left after 89,000km???

They only have 11mm when new..... At that rate of wear they will get 800,000km and probably outlast 3 Navaras! lol.

I have these tyres and they are at 5-6mm after 40,000km.

Muddy

Did you not check them with Cooper's depth thread guage ?

ATR's have heaps of thread, and its probably 13-14 mm deep from new. ( don't quote me on that, I might be a mil or 3 out )
Mine are LT245/17-16 !, reason being they mimick the original tyre size of my Navara, guess the deep thread, is part of the LT range.

Check out thier site if you like
This could explain why they ride like bricks, Light Truck tyres !

Did you get yours from Roachie ?

All jokes aside, I think I will be looking for Wrangler's, or BFG AT's, next time !
Mainly for the softer ride, and still get a bloody tough tyre

Cheers Mate
Bucky !

Yep, My other set are Goodyear MTR's in same size. These are on the Prado at the moment.

Noisy as hell but are a great tough all-rounder biased towards off-road. Can highly recommend them.

The ATR's are for hwy work if there is not too arduos 4WDing at the other end of the trip. The MTR's are for anything more serious.

35000kms so far out of mine on Prado diesel, still got 6mm tread left (think there was 10mm when new).

I run Coopers ATR's as well and I posted a question some time back as I was looking at two new tyres for a trip.

The end result was I put on two Goodyear tyres why .... Cost was one but I also wanted to try another tyre as see how they went against my Coopers.

I also noted that one of my Coopers had missing lugs, tread damage and what looks like little fractures betweeen the treads and a split (or cut) about 50mm along the lenght of the tyre between the treads. I mainly use mine on the black top however I have done The Cape and more recently SA trip. I rotate my tyres and balance either 5000 or 10000 klm's depending on what I have been doing. The other Coopers (4 of) are fine bit of damage nothing like this one tyre, just one looks like its done 20000 more than the others.

So will be taking it back an see what they say. I don't expect to have a win but will be interested in what they say about just one tyre a stand out from the others.

Currently I am happy with my two new Goodyear tyres.

Brian
