I drove that section about 8 years ago in an XD Falcon ute in the very early hours of the morning, the Grafton- Ebor leg appeared to be a reasonable unsealed winding road used by logging trucks as the area was heavily logged.

The Ebor to Armidale section is sealed and a pretty good trip, I last did that section about 3 years ago, turned at Ebor to head to Dorrigo, instead of going to Grafton.

Hope that helps

Kev

Go straight down the coast
I know you hate the trucks but this way its mostly freeway down there now so if its an overtaking issue (doing or being done) ,get nullified.
I don't know the last time you where down that way but there has been vast improvments along the Pacific ,and is preatty much dual carrige way all the way to Melbourne from Sydney

For mine it's down to Grafton, Across to Glenn Innes, down to Tamworth then out to Dubbo, than straight down the Newell. Could also go straight across through Inverell to the Newell if you really want to avoid the New England.

I HATE that bloody coast road!!! And the Hume is a defacto race track for semi's...

I drive Melbourne to the southern Gold Coast about once every 18 months. Tried a few different routes. Nothing beats the Newell for speed. The slowest bit is going through the back of the GC to Warwick - most single lane with few overtaking spots. Buses going to Brisbane go through Tamworth rather than going over the Cunningham Pass.

I did the coast road about 5 years ago for some variety. Much more scenic but lots of towns. It's bordering on being a two-night trip if in your own whereas the Newell is easy with a single stop.
