Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the best way to go from
Sydney to
Alice Springs (ps we have three
young kids coming with us - so I know by plane). Time frame would be 3-4 weeks one way - we are heading up to
Darwin after Alice.
Was thinking of going to
Broken Hill,
Tibooburra,
Cameron Corner,
Strzelecki Track (south),
Lyndhurst,
Marree then up the
Oodnadatta.

Hi Grego,
The route you suggested sounds good. When you get to Ood, a suggestion would be to head north to Mt Dare then back onto the the old finke track into Alice.
Dont forget to do the West (& east) Macdonnell ranges out of Alice & if you have time, spend a night at
Rainbow Valley (very pretty).
Cheers
Jason

What vehicle are you driving? Are you towing? When are you traveling?

Hi
John,
I will be driving a LC 200 and towing a Camprite Camper.

In which case none of your route will pose any problems at all. From
Oodnadatta, follow the Old Ghan route and don't forget to drop in on
Chambers Pillar.

If you have 3 or 4 weeks for the trip, it would be worth going into the Flinders after you come halfway down the
Strzelecki Track. Turn off just north of Mt Hopeless I think - go into Chambers
Gorge, Arkaroola etc, and head west through
Brachina Gorge, then up to
Leigh Creek.
When you have done the
Oodnadatta Track as far as
Oodnadatta, possibly take a southern detour into
the Painted Desert. The Ood Track west from
Oodnadatta can be pretty much all the same. So from
Oodnadatta head north to
Hamilton and
Dalhousie Springs (magic place for a warm swim) then head towards Alice via Mt Dare and the Old
Andado Track. This is not a difficult drive but takes you into some spectacular and varied desert country.
Stay overnight at the Old
Andado campground, have a look at the
homestead there and have a hot shower courtesy of the honesty box - wonderful place.
Cheers,
Val

Hi Val,
Thanks for this - sounds great. We intended to do Flinders on the way back as we are heading of to do WA after NT and then head back to
Sydney.
