I thoroughly enjoyed my Tassie trip of 06/07 and have booked my Paj on the ferry to return this Xmas. With a bit of knowledge I've also made a number of bookings in advance. I'll alternate between van park cabins, hotel rooms and my trusty tent. Just thought I'd set down my itinerary and any comments about what to see/do/stay in, would be appreciated. I leave the GC on Sunday Dec 7 to catch the ferry on the 10th. Stopovers at Moree, Forbes and somewhere near Melbourne are the go and while Seymour is likely for the 9th I'd appreciated other suggestions. Once in Tassie here is what I've planned so far

11, 12 - Stanley - two nights in the hotel - great pub!

13? any ideas?

14/18 Bush Inn, Deloraine

19/20 - Bruny Island - on site van I hope but tent OK

21/23 - Southport accommodation pending

24/26 - Richmond cabin - I 'd like to do Xmas dinner at the pub.

27/29 ? Are the Anglers cabins at Great Lake OK?

30 Dec/Jan 2 - Wayatinah in my tent

Jan 3 on - not quite sure yet. I go back across the ditch on the 12th. I'm looking at the Queenstown/Roseberry/Savage River area for a couple of days then finally finding a spot to stay and then drive to Devonport to catch the ferry. Is the Beaconsfield area a good place to stop? I enjoyed Beauty Point alst time but hear that one of the Beaconsfield pubs is great.

All views, comments, etc, greatly appreciated. I loved Tassie last time and you be hard pressed to find more hospitable, friendly locals.

You haven't mentioned the East Coast. From Launceston up through Scottsdale, Branxholm and out to the North East then down to St Helens, Falmouth and nine mile creek onto Bicheno and a must is Coles Bay and a hike across to Wineglass Bay. Camping at the Coles Bay Caravan park in tent should be available around this time of year.

You could also do the Huon Valley and down to Southport.

Heading South West out to Lake Pedder but I'm not sure about camping facilities down that way these days. There are some great National Parks on the way out to Lake Pedder though which are well worth a look.

Central area there is Oatlands, Ouse and Bothwell worth a look also.

Strahan and Ocean Beach. Franklin River. I could go on and on.

There are hundreds of places I could mention but haven't got the time to list them all. Being originally from Tassy I can honestly say its a great place to visit.

Gawd, I miss those scallop mournet pies.

Have a great trip as I'm sure you will.

Cheers

Southport's definitely on my list of places to stay. I also like all your other suggestions but I only have 5 weeks and decided this time to focus on certain areas and leave some until next time. I used my last trip as a reconnaisance journey focussing on some areas more than others. Bothwell/Ouse/Oatlands sounds in reach of what I'm doing and more info would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your help and advice.

For 13th, what about Cradle Mt? There is a campground; also lodge accommodation for a touch of luxury! Incredible scenery. I reckon Dover is a better place to stay than Southport - cabins at the nice caravan park there. Mt Field Nat park has campground that is a good base for exploring Lake Pedder area. On west coast, Queenstown is good base from which to do old railway trip, boat trip on macquarie Harbour etc - we do not like staying in Strahan itself. Zeehan is ok for a day or two to explore the area. If you are going to east coast, is a great caravan park at White Beach, near Port Arthur. Someone has already mentioned other east coast places that are good. Would highly recommend Bridport if you can get in there.

Strahan cemetry is a nice quiet spot for an overnight.
Sneak in behind the bushes on the water side, over the edge is the railway. No one goes there after dark, depending on the season, you will be woken by the boats, planes and train taking all the toorists out to get their little bit of wilderness.
cheers

If you can possibly find time to drive up Jacobs Ladder in the Ben Lomond National Park then do so. The road zig zags straight up a mountain and is unbelievably steep. The views are magnificent. You can see photos in Google but they don't do it justice.

Great Blog Jackablue. I went to some of the places you mentioned on my last tour but you've opened up some new possibilities including the Spray Tunnel and also Jacob's Ladder.

Wayatinah over new years could be fun. I'll be there with the kids from 4th till 11th Jan. Last NYE there was about 300 people in the park with a big all in party on the lake's foreshore, jukebox and all.By all accounts it was a huge night.

Would be good idea to call David at the park and ask if they're booked out yet. VERY popular place that time of year. Lake, Huge heated swimming pool etc.I book my week there 12 months in advance.

Enjoy your trip over here. :)

Already e-mailed David and he says that there will be plenty of room on the Oval where I camped last time alongside some very friendly natives - Richmond area I believe. I'm looking forward to seeing them again (though my liver may not be).
