hi, as i've posted before we are planning a trip for the end of october to the end of november, we are going to broken hill, white cliffs, then to dubbo, parkes, bathurst, down to the murray river and following that back home, my question is i was studing the maps today and noticed that we can turn off the barrier hwy and go up through bourke, narrabri and to tamworth, then head down to bathurst. is it worth while doing that extra trip??, is there really that much to see or do up there when there are no festivals on? or would we be better off just staying on the barrier hwy through to dubbo, which would give us a few extra days of looking around different places?, also we haven't got a 4x4 if that makes any difference.
and is it worth the drive out to white cliffs?
thanks from chris.

Don't know really what you are looking for - but "through" Bourke is about all I would do there (tho Kidman Camp is an exceptional caravan park in the area) - Narrabri - you could head into the Warrumbungles - plenty of camping in there - check out the satelite tracking stations etc - nice area indeed. Don't need 4x4 in there.White cliffs - not much there - unless you are into opals and like roughing it a bit - but if you do go this way - turn off at Walgett - 70k up the road is Lightning Ridge - great little town - lots to see and do here - the locals are very friendly - there is just about all you need iin the shops in town.
Enjoy your trip

I wouldn't.

Unless you have over a month I would limit the trip to what you have as your initial plan.

When staying in Broken Hill spend at least a week to 10 days. There is heaps to see in and around the area and most people make the mistake of spending too little time there.

Galleries, Silverton, Menindee, Mutawingee, Flying Doctor, School of the Air, just some time to sit in Argent St and watch the town go bye will easily take a week. Allow a good part of the day to travel to White Cliffs and spend at least one night to allow some time to look around the place do a bit of noodling etc. A drive around Wilcannia is very interesting and the place is not as bad as a lot of people make out. Have a look around Cobar on your way through. If you do all that you will probably need a night in Cobar, the CV Park there is not bad. You could spend 5 or more days in Dubbo, Bathurst is worth a full day (2 nights) and the Radio Telescope near Parkes will swallow up an afternoon. Depending on where you strike the Murray it would be easy to spend a week between Echuca and Mildura with a stop in at Swan Hill along the way.

Going up to Bourke, Narrabri and Tamworth would add about 1250 km's to your trip and then it would be rushed. Your on holidays, take your time have a good look at what is there, and relax. That's what holidays are for.

Duncs is absolutly spot on.

Pointless doing a zillion K's and only seeing the white line down the middle of the road.

We recently did the Darling River Run from Sydney over sixteen days. It would have been a hell of a lot better if we had twice the time.

Therer were so many places we did not have time to get to.

Broken Hill - Silverton - Lightning Ridge - Mount Oxley just to name a few. On the way home we could have spent a couple of days around Balranald rather than the one afternoon and it was painfull to have to pass the turn offs to Mungo and Willandra National Parks.

Take it easy, stop and smell the roses, or at least the road kill.

Gotta agree with Duncs. Did that run last September from Newcastle. Out to Gulgong, Wellington, Orange,Bathurst, Blayney, Cowra, then the Olympic H'way via Young, Cootamundra, Junee to Nerrandera, down to Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura, Wentworth to Broken Hill, White Cliffs, Cobar, Nyngan (great C.P. on the Bogan River), Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, Newcastle.
There is so much to see and do along the way, only limited by your time available, and all suitable for your vehicle, except maybe Mungo N.P. Great camp ground out at Silverton, can't remember it's name.
If you take in White Cliffs, try to make it a Friday, and go to the cafe across the road from the pub for your evening meal. It is a weekly event not to be missed, and you will meet some interesting locals.
We did this run in three weeks, and it was nowhere long enough to take it all in.
Have a great and safe trip.
