Googs Track Feedback

We will be coming back to Perth from Sydney towing a Tvan (with 07 Prado) not heavily loaded at the end of the month. Does anyone have any comments or recommendations about running Googs from North to South because that would be the direction that we would prefer to take from the Flinders.
Cheers

Mike,

The recommended direction is from South to North, and it is also a recommendation to not tow trailers.

Having said that, we have taken our camper trailer across from North to South without too much trouble.

Give DEH a call at Ceduna for latest conditions and info.

Geoff.

Mike,

We have done it both ways, did it North to South in August this year and feel that this was a better way to do it. Did not tow, but there has been plenty on here about towing.

Do a search on "Googs", you will come up with a bit of info, I did a blog on our trip with pics, I think it is dated 18 August 2008.

Enjoy.

The recommendation is to travel from South to North for safey reasons as much as anything else. The track is quite narrow, very soft in places with some short steep sections that have been nicely dug up courtesty of people not dropping their tyre pressures.

We have had way too many near miss head-ons on this track over the last year and I am getting tired of hearing of and seeking folk not using sand flags and ignoring the DEH advice to use C18 for travel on this track.

On many of the dunes there are no real areas to overtake or bypass without destroying the fauna, so track preservation is also becoming an issue as well. If people keep damaging these environments by virtue of poor driving and poor hygiene habits it will be another one at risk of closure.

So if you can I implore you to travel South to North if you can please.

Apart from that there is going to be fuel at Kingoonya pretty soon and why not consider going south via Mt Ive station and having a look around there and out to Lake Gairdner then further south via the Gawler ranges

Regards

I just did Goog's on Monday and Tuesday, and agree with all of RobAck's comments. The potential for a head-on on top of some of those dunes is very real...sand flag or not.

I can report that the track is in fair condition, I had no issues getting my overweight Troopy over the dunes.
The northern end of the track has been re-routed around the dog fence for the last 10 or 15km, and now joins the Tarcoola/Kingoonya road about 10km west of Malbooma.

Cheers

Quite some years back we towed a HD camper through there (N to S) with a Jackaroo TD - quite achievable without fuss, as long as standard sand techniques are used - as for the dunes, I recall about 3 significant ones at the top end, while all others on the track were minor - a sand flag would be a good idea - Parks could confirm the recommended CB channel there. The only snag was coming down some of the southern dune faces where north bound people with tight tyres had been digging holes in them (as mentioned above).... BTW ....good camping at Mt Finke too.

Did Googs Track in 06 from South to North - sure the dunes are small but left in corrugations and holes by people who dont know how to travel in sand. Towing a trailer through there is not in my view environmentally friendly - I agree with RobA's comments - go South to North - we did Mount Ive station, Lake Gairdner and gawler Ranges NP then down to Ceduna and North up Googs.
Good trip

Hi Mike
The DEH say that the track should be travelled from the South to North. When we travelled the track, it was very cut on the southern side due to people not knowing how to drive in sand.
If the DEH were so particular on this matter it would be marked as a one way track only.

Lots of people travel fom the North and would be the easier option, just make sure that you drop your tyre pressures right down and you will have no problems at all.

Cheers

I have done Googs track twice both times South to North.
Once with a group of 5 all with trailers only one recovery for whole trip.
The next was with a group of ten I was the only one with a trailer.
Some part anti trailer blokes with us were impressed with the ease of towing the trailer if the tyre pressures are correct ( down low)
The comments of towing trailers as not being environmently friendly is nonsense it all comes down to the individual doing the right thing be in 4wd let your tyres down reduce wheel spin and enjoy these tracks with your trailer if you so desire as thats why you bought it not to leave it at home.
And yes sand flags should be compulsory.
Enjoy the trip.
Googs lake is also a nice camp area.

People,
Many thanks to everyone out there with the great information.

I think that we could probably manage what we would like to do quite well.
I spent ten years in my misspent youth driving Land Rovers and Bedford RL all over Africa and the Sahara in particular.

However I do not want to add to the mess made by those whose confidence is not matched by their competence as is unhappily so often the case these days.

Next time we will leave the Tvan in Ceduna and do a lap with just the tent etc.

This time we plan to go from Sydney to Bourke and then on to the Flinders via Cameron's Corner. Does anyone have any suggestions about any special places to camp along that route not mentioned in the information on the great website?

Cheers
