Darling River Run Feedback

Once again I read of the "sparkling" Menindee Lakes. I was there in January 2009, having driven down the West side of the Darling River from Wilcannia, to find that only Copi Lake has any water. The others are parched, and camping along the river near Menindee is also in a desolate landscape - dusty and agonisingly dry, set amongst stressed gum trees. Our Darling River is but a muddy canal. Having planned to spend a couple of days camping and bushwalking along the river, we drove straight to Broken Hill instead. Now, THERE's a town, and camping at Silverton near the dry river bed is a pleasant experience indeed!

Yes you're dead right. I was there last week and the lower 2 lakes are dry as a bone. Obviously time to tweak the wording in this one.
thanks for your feedback - it is easy to sometimes overlook the obvious.

Hi David & Michelle. We are travelling the Darling from Bourke at end of April, hopefully down to Menindee then Broken Hill for a couple of days before up to Tibooburra with a day trip to Cameron's Corner. Any suggestions etc would be grateful.Kay

Head out of Menindee towards Wentworth, probably about 50ks and you find a place called Tolarno Station you can camp on the side of the river and last September there was plenty of water for $15 a night....top spot we went there to spend a night and ended up staying four and explored the area, including Broken Hill from there.

Tolarno has plenty of history as well....highly recommended

I'll second that! Tolarno is a great place for a camp. Miles of river bank and plenty of firewood. The homestead is fascinating. We went there last year on advice from the nice people at Pooncarie Coffee shop.

You read all sorts of misleading information in the advertising just look at the mumbo jumbo about Lake Eyre right now. There is some significant water getting into the system at Menindee and the Darling is flowing again, that is a start.

The lower lakes have been dry for about 5 years now and the water flow through the system is controlled to balance distribution, but the Darling River is certainly flowing heaps stronger than it has for a number of years now. You have missed an opportunity by skipping camping along the river, if we see everything looking great with lush vegetation we can't make comparisons. Silverton will always be great and the evening sunset over Mundy Mundy Plains is special and not to be missed.

I have just been looking at the levels and the EC (virtually salt content) coming down the river.
Noticed there is a great big mob of salt around Louth at the moment.

Thanks for the web address Dave.
We did the Darling trip last July & the info contained on the site would have been helpful for us.
Cheers.
