Hi all,

Has anyone recently done the Tablelands Track in the Kimberley? If so, I would appreciate feedback with regards to condition of the track, permission etc.

Thanks!

Hi, as far as I know and I will stand corrected, the track has been closed for years. John

The track is closed and the road through Teronis Gorge is no longer maintained and as you have to exit through Bedford Downs Station homestead it is pretty hard to not be seen. Dont think the Buntines would smile favourably on you being there with out permission.

Thanks Oldsquizzy and John. I have no intention of going there if the track is closed. It's just that I have read some different stories. Some of them saying it's open, but those were all of from a couple of years ago. Many great tracks left fortunately! Any suggestions for some Dutchies who have already seen a fair bit of Australia (at least for non-Aussies) and are quite interested in remote and fairly challenging tracks?

Cheers,

Jean-Paul

You can still get permission to go to Walcott Inlet through Mt Elizabeth Station, that's not a bad little run and is nice when you get there. If you can carry a tinnie the fishing is good.
Also some of the tracks through the Gregory National park are worth a look, you can do a semi circle and go from Timber creek around to Victoria River Downs or go through and down to the Buntine.
Just a couple to keep you amused

When you are up that way, speak nicely to Nick Bradley at Home Valley. He might suggest something...:-)

Nick is no longer at Home Valley. Went to Broome at the beginning of the year.

I made enquiries earlier this year with Bedford Downs Stn. The lady who took my call said that the track was impassable at that time but might be opened up for mustering at about this time of year. You could give her a call to ascertain status.

Btw, were you the guys who were going to do the Kennedy Ranges west side??

Cheers.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. Indeed I am the one who posted an enquiry about the Kennedy Ranges earlier this year. I wanted to post my feedback but couldn't find the thread anymore. We have had a truly marvellous trip through the Kennedy Ranges. By far the highlight of our trip. Scenery was just amazing and the track itself was in challenging condition :-) The Gascoyne River was dry and not too hard to cross. The people at the shire in Gascoyne Junction weren't very helpful, but the owner of Jimba Jimba Station where we called in for permission to camp on his land, was a very friendly man with some good information. We were glad we had the GPS with us as at the end finding our way out without GPS would have been pretty hard with all those different Sandiman tracks. Lots of overhanging shrubs which caused a fair bit of damage to the hire vehicle, but it was defenitely worth it. I wanted to post a question about a sign that we came across. Close to the dunes there was a sign with some numbers on it. I can't remember the exact numbers, but all around the sign there were old tools. I remember that you said that you have done the track over the top as well, so you might know the story behind this sign?

Cheers,

Jean-Paul

Hi JP, glad you enjoyed it. I agree it's a special place and not many people visit it from the west and on top.

I don't know anything about the sign, unless it was something to do with old Merlinleigh station which is about where you drop down off the top on the eastern side.

Cheers. j.
