Hi all,
We are planning a trip through Outback NSW and down the
Strzelecki Track into the Flinders in a bit over a month (if the roads dry out!). As part of the trip we are going from
Bourke via
Wanaaring to
Tibooburra and then on to
Cameron Corner and down the Stzelecki Track. Can anyone give an idea of what the road is like between
Bourke and
Tibooburra? Will be travelling in 4wd with and offroad camper.
Also interested in recomendations for
Camping sites around
Tibooburra and
Cameron Corner.
Thanks Jusel

Its a pretty good dirt road if the weather is ok. Close to
Tibooburra it goes through the Sturt Stony Desert so the rocks start invading the road. I've never camped at
Tibooburra but I think there is an area out of town to the north.
Fort Grey is popular closer to
Cameron Corner and the Corner itself is a good place to stop. Cheers, Mike

Jusel
as has been said, it is a pretty good dirt road (depending on the weather). When I drove it there were long stretches of bulldust in
places, but i don't think that would be a problem now.
There are heaps of
places to pull off the road between Burke and
Wanaaring, and a few
places further past
Wanaaring.
As has been said you can
camp around
Tibooburra.
Cameron Corner has
camping sites at the store, and you can also
bush camp on the way there. You can also
camp at Bollards Station (if it's open atm).
It's a beautiful area, but I imagine would be pretty hard going after wet weather.

Do stay at Camerons Corner - costs you a $5 note thrown up into the ceiling (if you miss sticking 3 times then shout the bar) - all money to RFDS. Fen & Cheryl are true outback icons. Just order your beer by colour of cans not brand! Cheers Heather

Whilst I like atmosphere at Camerons Corner, I wouldn't stay at the
camping area. It is too open to any wind that blows across the landscape.

We did a similar trip to you, but in the reverse direction.
We camped at
Wanaaring in the tiny, basic but empty
camp ground, hot showers etc .Its right next to the
general store.
Camerons Corner has plenty of room to
camp with some basic facilities. The pub was a welcome sight and the only building around. When we camped there, on a moonlit night, a bunch of
brumbies came galloping down the road past us. Remeber dont forget to shut the
gate as you leave NSW..!
One thing though which may be obvious, is try and not drive late into the afternoon as you head west. The kangaroos, goats, etc all are red from dust and blend exceptionally
well into the road side and will be hard to see with the sun in your eyes.
The road is long, red and straight with some corrugations and holes. In fact, we saw a Commodore out at Camerons Corner which had come the same way...
After you leave
Cameron Corner you will start crossing all the
sand dunes on the way to the Strezlecki- it was like a rollercoaster.

As already said road is OK if not wet, which it has been this year. I've done
Bourke Wanaaring 3 times so far this year in a VW T5.
You can
camp at
Wanaaring on the river or beside the Pub but remember you cannot rely on getting fuel at the store, sometimes he will only sell you 10 lt .
