Agroe,

There is heaps to do in Hobart depending on what your interests are.

1. Salamanca Market on a Saturday.
2. River cruises. (cadbury's or better still Peppermint Bay)
3.Mount Wellington.
4. Picnic at The Waterworks.
5.Constitution Dock (The best Fish & Chips can be had from the punt "Fishy Business"

The best idea is to visit the Tourist Centre in Cnr Davey Street and Murray St. in the City.

As for caravan parks, check to see if they have opened the Glenorchy Showgrounds for campers. They often do at this time of year.

Otherwise there is Treasure Island C/P at Claremont. (usually overcrowded and very windy at this time of year) and a busy Brooker Highway to get to the city.
The new c/p at the airport. (could be exi but easy run into city)
Not sure if Cambridge is still operating. (easy run into eastern suburbs and city)
A little way out of town (about 35mins) but IMO the pick of them is the caravan park at Snug. This also gives you access to a few other things to do and see. e.g. Bruny Island, Franklin wooden boat museum, Hastings Caves, Tahune Airwalk and the bus to take you from Oyster Cove Marina to the best thing of all, the high speed boat ride down to the bottom of Bruny Island.

There are many "free camping " spots around Tasmania and the Hobart area as well.

Enjoy your stay here,

Dusty

Agree with above, there's also a council run camp spot on the banks of the Huon River at Huonville opposite the Jet boat, 30 plus minutes out of Hobart. Also on the banks of the Huon River at Franklin, further 10 minutes away.
Cheers

Richmond - a bit basic, but has a pool (or at least it used to) and a cute camp kitchen. I haven't stayed in Snug or Huonville so cannot compare.

Also about 30 mins from Hobart. I've never found anything in Hobart itself.

Another good tour if you like a drop is the Cascade Brewery in MacQuarrie Street, South Hobart and if Whisky is the go then the distillery near the Grand Chancellor would be on the list.

We stayed at a CP opposite the Risdon Prison for about three weeks. It was either a Top Tourist or Big Four Member. Close to everything. Jumping Pillow for the kids. When we stayed they did have a small area up the back of park for caravans. It was a bit of squeeze up there, we had our Windsor Rapid, my f-i-l had a tandem axle van and there was another bush tracker squeezed in too. And I mean squeezed in, annex to annex, luckily we all got along. And the sites are not level.Well they Tassie level and we all know there is nothing level in Tassie.En suite sites. They gave us a few bottles of Tassie wine to make up for it. Not far a reservoir, which great place for a walk. Just be careful of the snakes. You get used of the lights of prison going all night. Traffic noise is not issue, because the van park is away from the road, unlike the cabins.

Don't forget to check out the firework shop in Glenorchy. The cadbury factory is shut over Christmas. Huon area is well worth a visit, as is the boat building school. At Port Arthur take at least a day to visit there, we were there all day, but I reckon we weren't there long enough to take everything in. Cascade Brewery gardens are brilliant. I managed to walk down Mt Wellington. We watched Wild Oats finish. My kids are sailing buffs, so to actually touch the boat that won the Sydney to Hobart was awesome. Shot tower has great views from the top. We brought the See Tassie card before we left and we used just about every single thing on it.

Despite all the drama with the sites, the nightly visit from the neighbourhood wallaby made up for it. Loved Tassie, could have stayed a few more weeks to see it all, but alas the guys had to get back for work. The area around St Helens is gorgeous as well.

For anyone that likes sailing, go down to the Constitution Dock, Princess wharf area and there is a choice of two "tall ships". The Lady Nelson does day trips and the Windward Bound day and longer trips. Both worth the time.
