Hi all,

Trying to find a way from Brisbane to Adelaide for next week that isn't under water. We normally travel New England & Newell Highways via Dubbo etc but there are so many highway closures and delays atm that we are looking for an alternate route.

We considered the Strzelecki track but it is closed too! The Birdsville track is possibly a little bit far though I'd love to see the Cooper Creek ferry.

Right now parts of the Darling River run is looking most likely- Brisbane via Goondiwindi, Moree, Walgett, Bourke, Wilcannia & Broken Hill. According to the NSW road conditions map at http://livetraffic.rta.nsw.gov.au/ , all roads are open, however according to the Exploroz Road Conditions, the gravel road between Wilcannia & Tilpa is closed in both directions- does anyone happen to know which one is correct?

And does anyone happen to know a better way for our trip at the moment?

Many thanks!

I think the coastal route all the way around is going to be the way to go if we can't make it across NSW! Thanks for your suggestion :)

There's still a heap of water upstream of Bourke, so the river Run may have a question mark over it, otherwise the route you have outlined should present no problems....

The Visitor's Centre at Bourke should have up-to-date info on the road conditions, and you will be able to take it from there ;-)

If the river run is a no-go, then the road down to Cobar is a good fast bitumen road, and probably faster to Wilcannia this way anyway (despite being 100-odd km longer) regardless of the condition of the river roads....

Thankyou. We've been told that the Cobar route is the fast way to go but I wouldn't mind taking the scenic route given that we are in the vicinity!

I called the NSW road conditions recording line and there was no mention of the Bourke-Wilcannia road so assuming the EO update isn't current? Anyway no doubt it will have all changed by next week so we will ring again before we set off, stop in at Bourke, and keep our fingers crossed that it stops raining for a few days :)

Hi Amy

The ExplorOz Road Conditios update is currently correct for this area according the the Central Darling Shire Councils own reports. (Unfortunately if they are incorrect we have no other way of checking at the moment - even though we have a live update system in place they don't use it).
If you wish to find out more you can contact the Central Darling Shire Council directly.
"CENTRAL DARLING SHIRE COUNCIL
For up-to-date information please contact the 24 hour road report information line on 08 8091 5155
Updates of the 24 HOURS ROAD INFORMATION LINE (08) 8091 5155 and re-issues the ROAD CONDITION REPORT occur only when road conditions change."

Bearing in mind that conditions change fast and it can take time for the info to flow through.

The advantage of the ExpolorOz Road Reports Unlike any other road reporting site is that it can be updated LIVE by people on location. When we can get people in the area to participate they can update this information live from their own computers laptops Iphone or PDA as it happens.
Unfortunately we cannot always get authorities to reliably do this as they prefer their own channels - not realizing how big a reach ExplorOz has throughout the nation.
We do have many remote businesses and some authorities who do live updates for us but it is a slow process to convert them over.

It would be very handy for everybody in flood affected areas if more people used our live interactive system.

Also anybody can add live feedback to the reports (you cant change the status from say - open to closed but you can comment).
By simply clicking on the road in question (or clicking "toggle all" at the top of the Roads List) a drop down menu opens where you can see the historical averages and travelers comments. We are also rolling out the addition of satellite images to highlight the road in question.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kerry- I wasn't aware that the council also put out a report. I'll check that one as well as we travel. Much appreciated!

Dont take the coastal route. Its full of 40KPH retirees. I can say that as I am a retire (involuntarily) and hate the slow pokes. Beach after beach after beach. As an ex surfer I am amazed that I would ever say this. So boring.

Stick with your initial idea until the last minute and then be flexible. At last you will see more of this "great land".

We are hoping to go for a drive after a Christmas visit to Adelaide. From Wentworth up to Menindee along the eastern side of the Darling. Stopping at Mungo NP for a couple of nights. Then turning right at Menindee and comin home.

Hi Amy

How soon next week are you going as there is a fair chance that the roads would be open again even if it involves a slight deviation to the normal track you take.

Yeah it is looking increasingly likely that it will be Bourke-Cobar-Broken Hill as you are travelling, though we think we will leave Brisbane on Saturday morning.

The BOM has a flood warning out for Walgett next week but it is 'minor flooding' so fingers crossed it won't close any roads. Then Bourke area is expected to flood (moderate to major) from early January. We'll find another way back to Brisbane!

Hi Amy,

The water are starting to recide although another peak is coming down from Wello to Dubbo but with the Burrendong dam ony releasing 10000mes a day the water wont be that bad.

If we dont get signifigant rains between now and next week most tar roads will be open.

Cheers Wilko

We were in Bourke 2 weeks ago and it was flooded both north and east. Cameron's Corner had a couple of inches and both Birdsville and Strezlecki were closed. Our plans of doing the Birdsville track and Savannah Way were thrown out the window. We eventually did Oodnadatta track on our way from Sydney to Darwin. Even access to the caravan park at Silverton had been closed for a couple of days as the creek across to it was flooded. The information centre at Broken Hill provided us with up to date info when we arrived there. If you go via Wilcannia the Shell servo was closed as a local youth had taken to the bowsers with a golf club and caused $50,000 worth of damage. The BP is open though.
Also driving on the dirt as the afternoon shadows creep across the road makes it very difficult to spot the potholes. One of our vehicles hit one on the road to Hermannsberg and dented his steel rim, he was probably doing 40kpm but the pothole was about 40cm wide and about as deep.
cheers
Wayne

Im also heading down that way, was going to leave the Gold Coast on the 23rd heading to Lightning Ridge, White Cliffs, Broken Hill & down to Mt Gambia.
Now looks like we will have to take the boring black top all the way.

Cheers
