Hi all, looking to take the camper trailer to the Flinders Ranges at Easter (end April) this year. Travelling from Melbourne. Is it as good as people say. Is a week too long? Would appreciate any tips/sights to see or give a miss. Thanks

"Is a week too long". A week is probably just long enough to drive the tracks and relax just at Warraweena, and thats just one property with a few tracks and awesome scenery. Way too many things and places to list, possibly base camp somewhere and do day trips from there. I am sure others will have many more ideas.

Hi Jane, If you click on the blue Flinders Ranges link in your post it will unfold just about everything you need to know. It is a great place and I miss having it in my 'backyard'. A week is not too long. Several weeks would not be too long. Have a great time.

Cheers

Surely you jest Jane ! If the weather is good, a week might just be enough to have you realise "what was I thinking ?".......after the breathtaking landscape, you have impressive geology, fossils, flora and fauna..... one camp fire under the stars and you might be in danger of moving there! Hawker is not a bad start for newcomers - the sealed road now runs all the way up to Blinman - if you want to stay at caravan parks, Hawker, Rawnsley and Wilpena Pound are all good - there are numerous caravan/camping parks on pastoral stations in the area too - if you want to stay in the National Park's gorges, there are designated camp grounds (Brachina / Trezona is probably my favourite area) - then there is Parachilna Gorge up near Blinman. Going north from Blinman up to the Gammons and Arkaroola is another story, but it only gets better. There is plenty of published info available - Parks SA is a good start.

Hi Jane,
Funny thing this, I'm getting a list of things to do written up for my Dentist Jane in Vic.
I agree with Darian.
You mustn't miss the beautiful Mooralana scenic loop, but if in the morning it's best to see going West & visa versa cos the sun is in your eyes doing it the other way.
Wilpena Pound is a very different landscape than the Gammons then further up is the more arid Arkaroola. All of these can only be given justice by seeing them in 3 different trips.
Then again, some people love Wilpena but don't like the arid areas further North.
The Wilpena Pound and the area surrounding it is magic and a magnet to hordes of people at Easter.
The Autumn weather makes it even better, but your nights will be freezing so have enough wood collected out of the Park for a good fire every night & morning. Being on private property will probably help immensely with the wood supply.
Take care, safe travels.........You lucky girl.
Bye Ma.

Hi Jane

For me the Flinders would rate up there with one of the best locations to visit around Australia. You must have lived a very sheltered life not to hear how great they are. Trust me a week there will go very quick and you will have wished you could have spent more time there.

If you enjoy the great outdoors, unreal scenery, some fantastic drives, seeing lots of wildlife, then you will be back again in the future, that time staying longer.

Without being cynical, if you do not like the Flinders you would very very hard to please.

Here are a few trek notes that I have completed for EO:

Here are a few pictures of what you can expect.

Enjoy the Flinders and you will be back for more.

Cheers

Gee Thanks Stephen.

Now I will be struggling to find a camp spot with all the Victorian's coming over this Easter, after reading your post.

Lucky I have access to a private property, I will be spending 6 days at Easter there.

You will have a ball and as busy as the Flinders will be, you can always find a place to be on your own.

Have a great time there.

Hi Pete

Years ago you would walk up the creek bank to get to the old Homestead from the Pound. They now have two tracks when you get to the end of the road, one will take you to high ground, while the other is now on a well made track that still for most of the way follows the creek, that is just one of the little bridges to cross. Here is another longer one that cross the same creek:

Hi Jane,

A great place to base yourself in the Flinders Ranges is Warren Gorge (free camping) 22 kms North of Quorn (the capital of the Flinders Ranges). From there you can do numerous day trips in the Flinders. Warren Gorge usually has a creek with running water, long drop toilets, a walking trail about 2 hours around and a 4wd track. From there you could visit Kanyacka ruins and Probey's grave, Wipena Pound, Buckaringa Gorge, the old main North road through Hooikna and Hookina creek returning via Hawker, Yarra Vale Gorge and various other tourist attractions. You also would be in close procimintry to the town of Quorn 22 ks and the city of Port Augusta 62 ks. Various small towns most with a quaint hotel in the district are Craddock 60 ks, Willmington 62 ks, Hawker 65 ks and Carrieton about 70ks. South of Warren Gorge you will find Alligatore Gorge, Port Germain Gorge, Mount Remarkable and Melrose (two pubs). Some great walking trails are in close proximity to Warren Gorge they are the Dutchmans Stern approx. 3 hrs up and back or 5 hrs ring walk, Devils peak 1. 1/2 hrs return and Mount Brown approx 4 hrs return. I'm bias I live here and love it.

Come on Graham
I know you're biased, but isn't Warren Gorge a bit remote from the Flinders as most people know them. I would suggest you are about 150km's South of where most people would say is the start of the Flinders. Sure the places you mention are worth a visit, but for a person who has 7 days to see "The Flinders" , I would recommend staying at Wilpena, or Rawnsley Park and heading out North from there. This would give easy access to the National Park and its gorges, Blinman, Parachilna, Sacred Canyon etc. There are also a number of privately owned 4x4 drives in easy range, and as has been said, some of these places also offer camping.

Teege,
The Flinders Ranges start a long way further south.

Around Quorn are some of the best kept secrets of the Flinders. Horseshoe Range, Argadells, Bendleby, Mt Remarkable etc.

I haven't been back to Wilpena for 30 years - too much better stuff further south and further north.

I have to agree Phil.

Some of the best drive tracks for the Xtrail are in the Southern Flinders from the Bridle track onwards.

Thanks for the support Phil and Cuffs, it becomes a joke when the Tourist arrives here and announces they are off to the Flinders we wonder what these hills and mountains are around here, couple of more places to visit Waikerie Falls and Mount Brown walking trail. You can also view the Flinders from the back of one of Graeme and Jannine's Camels or take a ride through the Pitchie Ritchie pass on a steam train.

P.S. I see you also have a T-Van Phil, great units, see you guys around some day and thanks again for the support on where the Flinders is.

Hi Phil

Have you been around Holowilena, there is great country around there. Also one place that we stumbled upon by chance was Caroona Creek Conservation Park, east of Mt Bryan. I could take you in there, say shut your eyes and when you opened them, you would swear that you were in the Flinders.

Here are a couple of photos of what it is like.

Gday Stephen,
Hey you just let go of some more secrets of the Southern Flinders !!!! :-) but I reckon 35km from Burra must be the very southern part of the Southern Flinders :-)

I hadn't heard of Holowilena but will google it. But the recently declared Caroona Creek Conservation park is one I've heard about and is on the to-do list - hopefully get to it this year, but I've already booked 9 weeks leave - 2 trips to GVD, 1 to Simpson and a cycling trip to Vietnam so its looking good. Just need to squeeze in a few weekends away!

I took some Japanese friends there who had a spare weekend, they loved the Park camp site and the wild life roo's, emu's and a wombat, returned via Dare's Hill

They thought they were in the middle of the outback.

You should have given me an email prior to the trip. You would have driven to within 100 metres of these on the Dares Hill circuit....well there is next time.

It seems pointless if you have to drive an extra 200 kilometres a day to get into the main area ...... even if Warren Gorge is FREE.

The money you save is a fraction in extra fuel you use.

Quorn is a very nice place and plenty to see, Hawker is good but we always stay in the bush camping section at Rawnsley, Wilpena Pound is over rated and expensive.

I'm a bit against FREE (free loading) camping here in SA as the local operators who put all the work in loose out.... bit like borrowing your neighbours tools all the time when you want to do a DIY job at home.... hell why should I use my money to buy tools when I can use my neighbours for FREE.

Support local tourism and there operators.

Suggest you buy a copy of Ron and Viv Moon's book "The Flinders Ranges - An Adventurer's Guide". It is a good resource, relatively up to date and full of practical info re tracks, camping spots, places to visit, history, etc

Hi Jane, at the risk of sounding like Michael Caton, your dreamin, was there for 21/2 weeks (including the Gammon Rgs) and felt we were at least a week short.
Willow springs also a good spot to stay while in the area, good chance to drive Skytrek (need around 6 hours though) They have a web site

Have a great time,
