Hi Guys,

We are doing the High Country over the 2 week period of Easter and at the end taking a look in Canberra. My question is does anyone know of a bush style camping area close to Canberra as we arent really Caravan Park lovers.

There are about 8 vehicles with campers in our group, so we will need a fairly large area, but it will be after school holidays are finished. Any help will be appreciated..

Cheers

I was going to suggest the Cotter campground but I see that its closed until the end of May - there a dam being built nearby. Next best option might be Kowen Forest. I havent been there (being a local haven't needed to) but I think it gets a fair bit of use. Have a lookhere

The autumn leaves should be great this year after all the rain - there are a few trees starting to turn now.

Cheers,

Kowen (old homestead camp ground )is a good big area. we used it a few years ago as a base for a group from sydney attending Queanbeyan 4wd show.
you have to book thru ACT forests and get number for lock on entry gate.

unfortunately not much good driving in Kowen forest.

other option is further out of town (west)in the Brindabellas where you can book Blue Range hut/camp ground.

cheers

Kowen Camp Ground looks really goodguys thatnks for the info, any idea how far it is into Canberra, (distance and time) we would probably travel in a couple of times, we have a couple of exchange students with us so want to do the War Memorial, Parliment House and also probably the Zoo... I have done the meet the Cheetahs and its a blast.....

Depends on where you want to go in Canberra, and time of day. But say 25km from camp to the War Memorial, so half to three quarters of an hour roughly.

Depends how close you want to be.

Wee Jasper near Yass is a great spot, there is a back road into the ACT, Mountain Creek rd, and that cuts the distance to about 72 ks.

Check out Camps Aust Wide they may have one marked.

Honeysuckle Creek is a nice spot, down South in the ACT, camper trailers would be OK in there.

You could come in from adaminaby out of Cooma and stay at orroral valley or honeysuckle creek. As already mentioned.

Alternatively if you come in from the tumut side, camp in brindabella valley next to the river, If long plain road is open you could come in this way also, past blue waterholes. This route is detailed in the boiling Billy publication, in my opinion the best guides to high country and nsw.

Have a great trip!
