just wanted to give a heads up about a great little free
campsite we stopped in at 2 nights ago. whilst you don't get much for free these days, the folk at
Cracow (it's in Qld about 50klms S.E of
Theodore) have installed 3 or 4 (i can't remember how many were there exactly) free caravan type, drive through powered sites to
camp at, behind the museum in town. the site comes with free hot showers and flushing
toilets, gas bbq and a shelter with seating surrounded with green grass and a kids playground just off to the side aswell. speaking to a lady involved with the construction of this
campsite, it was only opened in April of this year, so everything is in new condition.
originally we planned to
camp elsewhere for the night at another free spot, but when we got there at 1.00 p.m it was jam packed and we couldn't find a suitable spot for 2 camper trailers to set up in, so moved on. knowing that Fred Brophy (look the name up if you don't know who he is !!!) owns the
Cracow pub we decided to go and try and meet an Aussie icion in person, and stay the night in the tiny town of
Cracow. on arriving at the pub, Fed was having a beer with a few of the miners who work nearby on the verandah. we were told by Fred, we could
camp either across the road from the pub or about 100 mtrs up the road behind the museum and both locations were free of charge.
after setting up
camp we walked back down to the pub and had a few drinks aswell as dinner there, after all, you really should put money back into the community after they provide free accomodation like that IMHO.
cheers.

Great info rumpig, we travel thru
Cracow often and the last time I only noticed the new
toilets in the
park over the road from the pub, interesting guy Fred.

yes the
park across the road has the new
toilet block aswell, but no showers. we looked at
camping there as it was a shorter walk to the pub, but the ground wasn't very flat to set up
camp on. i'm not sure if the trucks continue through the night, but with the right angle corner there they negotiate at the pub, it would be abit more noisey there to
camp at i reckon.

There is also a free site for 72hrs in
Richmond (
Sydney) where you can stay and jump a train into town and of course replenish supplies at
Richmond shops
Free camp at Richmond
This is a trend which should be more widespread. I love to spend my dollars in such towns.

Image Could Not Be FoundG'day rumpig, yes Crackow is a great place to go to, I have been going there on 'n off for over 15 years! I have been to 3 or 4 new years eve's there as
well. before Fred took over & the mines reopened they would have an official new years eve rodeo in the small
carpark at the back of the pub!! All the riders would be half full of ink by then! very entertaining! There was no
cook then for any meals but if you phoned ahead a local woman would turn up with your hot meal ready. It used to cost $20 a night for the family & the dog to stay in the rooms overnighy - great value!
