Hi Folks,
I am looking for a great
camping spot on the
darling river between
Wentworth and
Pooncarie. The choice location will be a secluded bush
camping area suitable for fishing,
camping with children and generally soaking up the ambiance of the Australian bush. I'd love to hear from anyone who can recommend a great spot which is accessible and from anyone who has some photos if possible.
Thanks in advance

Check out
Places as there are many hundreds of
camping places, many with photos from all over OZ.
We travel that area quite a bit and I have posted into
Places many times, unfortunately not in the section you require, but someone else may have done so.
Regards
Paul H

You will not find much of what you require in that area..."secluded"..hard to find.."suitable for children"..the Darling along there has mostly steep banks and is not very wide and I believe is still running rather quickly...as for bush
camping area I presume you mean somewhere that has plenty of shade...even that is scarce....sorry to be such a spoil sport but there are lots of other areas that are nearby that would be better. Go to
Wentworth , go past the lock , turn left and follow the road to the river...heaps of
free camping area, not" secluded " but the river is shallow near a sand bar there, there is plenty of shade, it is not far from town and in the 8-9 years that we have been going there we have not had any trouble from or with anyone...cheers

hi offr
At pooncarrie there is a campground on the nothern end of town right on the darling, its usually very quiet there. Its part of the sporting ground with a oval and plenty of
places for the kids to run. YOU can
camp on one of the 6 powered sites for 10 bucks a night or you can
camp on the river. There is about 6 tabels and hot plate wood barbys along the river,
toilets, 1 dollar showers and heaps of room. iff you want a bit more secluded go about 1/k km past the last powered site and you can
camp on the river edge out of sight of any one. This is a top little town, very neat and tidy, you get a great feed at the pub. back in june the store had shut down so there was no supplies in town except what you could buy at the pub. i will be back there in a few weeks so i could give you an update on the store there. Telstra mobile reception there as
well. Good sealed road from
wentworth. Good playground in the
park in town, nice little coffey
shop by the river in town. just a great spot. cheers mm

There are some great spots on the Darling a little further upstream near Menindie.
This spot is on a bend in the Darling, so the
water is quite deep. It even has a rubbish bin that the Parks guys empty every couple of days. Most of the
camping areas along this stretch of the river are level, close to the river, and about 500 metres apart. This one is about a kilometre from a drop
toilet, if this is what you need.

My experience is that there are very few
places with kids in campsites.

If you'fre prepared to go that little further passed
Pooncarie then
Tolarno station might be a consideration for you. Plenty of river frontage to
camp, and the $10 per vehicle, while not "free" includes a hot shower at the shearers quarters. You really need to know the station owners if you want to get in on the Darling between
Wentworth and
Pooncarie.
We spent three nights on
Tolarno a few weeks back and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cheers Mick

Thanks to all for the information. I remember
camping as a kid on a small sandbar at ?Avoca station.
Might have to travel further afield.
